The v731 ECM on my 1987 Flx Metro has blown (a mechanic ran 24v through the ground wire to the computer) up and I need a new used one. I contacted NIMCO bus and gave them the part number for the unit I am replacing (p/n 16059409). The salesman said that they had 5 different part numbers but nothing that matched mine. p/n 1228283, 1227167, 1227938, 1227327, 16241550 are all available. My engine is a 6v71 (yes I said 6v71) with a mechanical governer. The dead ECM is about the size of a shoe box only shorter, and there are two wire harness recepticals on one side.

I guess the question is...Do any of you know if any of these other p/n will work in my bus?

Also is there a beter place to find ECM's other than from NIMCO, they want $400 for a running take out.

Thanks in advance...joe

Joe
You need the part number and the chip number from underneath the small door on the computer. There is so many combinations available. I would go to my local transit company and see if they can give you any numbers or call Allison tech dept to see if they can match up anything. You need to know the rear end ratio or hopefully somebody on the board will have the same setup and be able to assist you. When I needed one I just tried another one from a V731 and it worked okay. Try a local bus scrap yard to see if they have a computer to try. They are worth about $100 - $150 used. Most places won't sell them separate. Bill

Your ECU #16059409 is described as follows:
Electronic Control Unit Assembly, Sealed Standard, Fuel Economy, N-R Inhibit, Service 16059409 ECU Assembly With 16070409 ECU Assembly.
Electronic Control Unit (without PROM) Remanufactured 1227167.
PROM and Retainer Assembly - 16070808 (about $100 for PROM)
When you remove the ECU disconnect the batteries as wire 203 (A3) is alive at all times. Make sure wire 201 (K2) is grounded to frame as close as possible to the ECU or tranny won't shift properly.
The PROM is located under a panel that is held on with screws. Remove the chip and retainer carefully by pulling up. You have to disengage a tab at each end if I remember right. It has been a long time since I pulled one out. Just look at it and you can tell. Pull straight up so you don't bend the pins. Hope this helps you. Bill

Joe, I've had very good experiences with General Diesel Electronics in Mn. A shift selector pad from DD was $1600.00. GDE sold me a rebuilt for $200.00. Helped in other ways also. Good people. Next day air available. 218-262-4553. Harnesses, ECMs, I think they have it all.
