I have decided to get a block heater. I have a 8v71 in a MC8.
Apparantly there are two types....One is a screw in near the starter...the other is a 4 bolt plate style that says for right side...
Is there any advantage to one or the other?
I assume they both heat the coolant in the block. Right??
I just want the easiest one to install I guess.
Thanks

Cameron,You have to drain the coolant to install either one. The 4 bolt plate is the easiest to install and the one most commonly used. Mine works great.....easily one of the best returns on $$$ and time on bus project- HTH

The 4 bolt is the easiest but I had to use the screw in because my transmission cooler used that access hole. The 4 bolt is a 1500w unit, the screw in types come in 1000w and 1500w. I couldn’t get the 1500W to fit because of clearance issues that my transverse configuration creates in my GM. I really wanted to use the 1500w but I have found that I have had no problems with the 1000w unit. Some of the best money I ever spent, well worth it. Quick starts and it’s better for the engine. The 1500w sells for around $42 and the 1000W for $40 at a local truck parts supplier.

It seems the 4 bolt plate one is most common.
I guess this is the one that goes in on the right side near starter (MCI 8)
i found another one that is a screw in...It says it goes in the front face on engine...

It is AC-101 on this link. Is this the same screw in one you are talking about?....If so where does this screw into?
Thanks again.

Yes, that's the one. It screws into a plug that has to be removed from the block, right below the head in the block water jacket. These plugs can be a pain to remove.

If you decide you want to use the screw in type, try breaking the plug loose before you order the heater in case the plug doesn't want to budge.

To remove my plug I had to drain the coolant and use a torch to get the plug very hot (The fleet mechanics where I worked told me how to do it). I did try first without the heat, and a very long cheater bar, but no luck. After adding the heat it came out with a short breaker bar, no problem. Probably could have used just a ratchet.

Thanks for the info..I have read the plugs can really be IN there. I will try to break it free first. Looks like it would be a bit easier to install than the plate one if it will budge.
