Hi all,

I need to buy a new truck and I want to make sure that I can tow it 4-down. I have been searching around for a list that I know is out there but I can't find it. I am no longer a member of FMCA. I prefer GM products. Does anybody know of a free listing of models that might fit my requirements?

4X4, auto tranny, no tranny pump or driveshaft disconnect.

TIA,

Tq

The Dodge Dakota extended cab 4x4 works fine. It has a disconect button to put everything in nuetral. My father in law has been towing one for years and has had good luck with it.

If it is an automatic, you will have to disconnect the driveshaft, as the rear clutch/bushing, and bearings will not receive proper lubrication unless the engine is running, or there is a lube pump installed to provide the lubrication when the engine is off.

I've just been informed that all 4WD GM trucks to present are towable. I'll be shopping for a 1/2 ton extended cab soon.

From what year on? My 96 Jimmy isn't because it has push button 4wd, which doesn't provide a neutral position for towing.

John,

I think in your owners manual you will find a way to shift into neutral. It's something like pressing the 2 wheel and the 4 low switch at the same time and holding them down for 10 seconds.

hth, Tq

p.s. I bought my new towed today.....

John, here are the shifting instructions for my 99 Tahoe. Should be similiar to yours:

1999 Tahoe 4 X4
Shifting Transfer Case with automatic transmission and Electronic transfer case

Shifting to Neutral
The vehicle should be attached to the tow vehicle before shifting to neutral
1. Set the Parking Brake
2. Start the vehicle
3. Put the transmission in NEUTRAL (N)
4. Shift the transfer case to 2HI (if necessary)
5. Simultaneously press and hold the 2HI and 4LO buttons for 10 seconds. The NEUTRAL light will come on when the transfer case shift to neutral is complete.
6. Shift the transmission to REVERSE (R) for one second.
7. Shift the transmission to AUTOMATIC OVERDRIVE (D) for one second.
8. Turn the ignition switch to OFF (Accessory, not lock)
9. Place the transmission shift lever in PARK (P)
10. Release Parking brake
11. Make sure steering wheel is not locked.

Shifting out of Neutral
1. Set the parking brake
2. Apply the foot brake
3. Start the vehicle with the transmission in PARK (P)
4. Press the 2HI button
5. Shift the transmission to NEUTRAL (N)
6. When the transfer case has shifted out of NEUTRAL the NEUTRAL light will go out and the 2HI light will come on.

Just checked owner's manual;" Towing behind a motorhome with push button transfer case is not recommended because transfer case does not have a neutral position." Oh, well, I was hoping that mine was one of the ones you could do that with.
