Resurrecting NiCad battery packs-

A friend gave me a very nice 18V Craftsman drill with bad batteries. I searched the web for a god deal on replacement batteries and stumblrd on this:

http://www.batteryresurrection.com/

Sure looked like a scam to me. The site is ugly. The bright colored text screams 'bogus'. Usually I can find the fatal flaw in these sites pretty quick but then I found legitimate ebay feedback. Not the screen shot he has on his site but actual feedback on ebay.

That was worth risking $12 so I ordered the instructions.

The two batteries displayed green and yellow lights on the craftsman charger. They would not take a charge and had around 5VDC on the meter.

I followed the instructions and the batteries both had 18.2 VDC on the meter. When i put them on the charger the green and yellow were gone. I got a steady red charge light for about two hours and then a steady green.

The drill works great. Has plenty of torque.

I haven't tested the performance over time on a project but I certainly have my $12 worth.

I could share the basic technique here but this guy really deserves to profit from his efforts.

I used to have a camera that had a special battery...it looked like a AA...but it was shorter&expencive...when it would go down I would hook it up to my 12 volt battery charger for about 20 seconds & it was just like new

Probably a resistor device that partialy shorts the cells to heat them up a bit...
Then you charge them up...I have had great luck with the reconditioner feature on teh battery charge I have...It is a de-sulfate setting.
It take s 24 hours but it WORKS.
I used it on a motorcycle battery that would not hold a charge when parked. After the recon...it has not failed to start yet and it sits for months at a time. Before, if it sat for over 5 days, it would crank slow or not enough to start.
The device on the website mentioned says it does it in a minute or two...no way it could be the same....this is why I suspect a high amp draw then a full charge.

I wrote Millwaukee Tool regarding a 14v. drill battery that was not charging. They sent me a paper with instructions to breifly hook up a 9v. battery to it. I tried it a few times with no luck. They eventually replaced the batter for free.

Not worth paying the ebay price but it does work for a short time. You have to use 12 volts on each individual cell for brief contacts. That means you have to take the battery pack apart. I had four battery packs that were giving me a lot of trouble and I finall replaced the cells with NIMH. Now I have 3 times the original power reserve, and they don't discharge nearly as fast as nicads in storage. Took about an hour for each battery pack to solder the new batteries together and close the case. NIMH batteries were approximately $2.00 apiece for sub C, 3500 MAH. NIMH is much easier on the environment to, so it was worth the trouble for that too.

I have been using a 12v 3 amp power supply for years to "hot shot" lower voltage cells to revive them. 3-4 seconds at a time for AA rechargeables. I do it about 3-4 times..
They will get warm...don't get them too warm or hot...they can and will explode in your hand.
After this hot shot, put them on a slow charger for a full charge.
This can help a lot. But like others mentioned, many times you have to take the pack apart to hot shot each individual cell. Many times only one is shot and won't come back to life and is killing the whole pack. Solder time!

Stephen, Where do you get the NIMH cells?

Isn't NIMH Nickel Metal Hydride? Nicad is Nickel Cadmium - HTH
