Can anybody tell me all the pro and cons about transmissions for my bus. Ive got a dd in the back and Im thinking to stay with dd, but want to change to something other than the 4 speed. Im thinking about changing to an automatic just to get rid of all the linkages and problems they are creating around my slideout support slides. Can you all give me any recomendations on automatics.

Thanks kysteve

Steve I believe the tried and proven Allison will be your most cost effective, either HT740 or 754. One possible source would be Caylor Supply. I only mention them because they can ship you a complete "kit" of all the componants you need (used serviceable parts), such as: transmission, flywheel, flexplate, double oil cooler for your Detroit/automatic, modulator, oil filter & lines, yoke, shifter, shift cable, etc, etc. It makes it a little easier to get all the parts on one pallet rather than rounding them up individually. Some suggestions: The DD double oil cooler used with automatics is large and expensive. You may opt to keep your single engine cooler and add another strictly for the trans. I used the late model Modine unit which Prevost uses, and which replaced the earlier used SW unit. I'm very happy with it. If you don't already have an air throttle, now would be a great time to change over to it and install the air modulator assembly. And if you really want to improve things, you could install a Stone-Bennett air/electric shift kit in place of the long shift cable and manual shifter. Shifts are much more precise, takes up less room, and has an LED indicator light for gear selection. You will have to make a driveline modification too, and obtain or make a Eagle trans. dipstick assembly. (I have one if interested). Hope this gives you food for thought. Good luck.

That why I love this site!!! You can get pounded in the head or get great information thrown at your head. Thank guys

Bommer, is that a driveline modification you have or is that a dipstick assembly you have.

Pat, hey buuuuuddddyyyyy, where did yuins get that purdy stearing column? Wonder what thatal set me back in greengoes? Got tired of eaten rust at the back of the bus and thought Id work on raising my drivers floor area and at least get things sorted where I can think about all the things to change up there.

Thanks Guys Steve

Mark this worked out great I called Sam Caylor today, wow what a refreshing person to talk with after dealing with so many people who weren't, he actually told me what would and would not work with the parts I'm needing He was excellant to work with and very knowledgeable! See you never know exactly what is going to turn up thanks again!

Pat, what are you planning to run, standard or automatic? If you run across anything out there keep me in mind on an automatic. Not sure yet whether Im going to use a slightly used unit or a new one but im always on the lookout for a good deal.
Also I wasnt poken fun at your steering column, I really would like to find such an item. I gota figure how to raise it up about a foot or so from its original mounting spot. I figure I might as well do it with the new one and then just take it back out of the bus.
Thanks, Steve
