Our genset died this week. We have a 2 cylinder Kubota turning a 8kva generator head. From what we can determine the engine was too small (12HP) for the generator head. I would like to get a set that is desinged properly and of course won't cost an arm and a leg.

General industry rule of thumb is two hp per KW of rated output.
Is the alternator actually rated in KVA? Is so, then the Power Factor is probably 0.8 lagging. This would equate to 6.4 KW, so the engine size would be correct.
Check with Dick Wright at Wrico in Oregon. He can help you.

Call Timothy Leid at Leid Diesel Service, Newville, PA, 717-776-7725. He built an 8.9 KW w/a 3 cylinder Kubota for me...price can't be beat. He may even give you something on a trade in for your old one.

Mark - I have a Kohler 7KW GenSet (LP) that the heat melted the rotor last summer, but the engine runs great. I'm replacing the whole unit. I have no idea what size the engine is, but if you can use it, & you can (or have someone else) check it out, & if it'll work, pick it up here in Southern Minnesota for whatever you think it's worth, it's yours. Otherwise, chances are it'll be headed for the salvage yard. Norm Edlebeck
