i replaced the blower on my engine after it blew the blower shaft. i removed the alternator in the process and plugged the oil line that feeds the alt. after i got the blower back on i cranked the engine and noticed the dash oil gauage was reading around 45psi cold idle were as before it would barley move from the 5psi position. the question i have is that i notice thatthe same oil line that feeds the alt also feeds the oil pressure manifold above it. is there supposed to be some kind of a restrictive fitting going to the alt so the pressure will register correctly on the manifold? thanks

There is a restrictor fitting on the altn. I had the same problem before and if you search the archives there is a part number that I was given. I don't remember what it was after I bought one. It allows full flow to the rear diode section and a restricted flow (approx 1/16" hole) to the front bearing section. I changed the oil pressure sender to the front oil gallery - right hand side (viewed from the front of the engine) and now the gauge reads 50+ lbs.

The bearings and means to lubricate and cool them have been changed significantly. An external oil line, tee and elbow were added as part of the alternator assembly to deliver oil at the lowest practical temperature to the bearings. The tee features a special small orifice in its upper leg to control the amount of oil to the bearings. If a commercial tee is used, so much oil will go to the bearings and too little oil will go to the alternator resulting in higher alternator component temperature causing short generator life. FOUND THE ANSWER ON ANOTHER SITE BUT NOW I NEED THE ORIFICE SIZE

The oriface is a #60 drill. I measured one of the fittings on a spare altn I have. The restricted flow is to the bearing or drive end. Full flow to the diode section. Bill

When I had an 8V71 the altn only had one line feeding it oil to the rear diode section. There is no restrictor in the one line setup. The line then went to a juntion block with the oil pressure sender in it. I always had low readings from the guage when it read from the juntion block. I moved it to the front of the engine and it read proper then. Bill

It shows it in the book. For some reason it says do not use the left side one. Use the plug near the cam pulley and you will get a good reading. Bill
