Greetings to the electrically gifted!

In messing around with the never ending theorizing that is bus dreaming, I started thinking about battery capacities and all things to do with adding up loads and potential generating capacities in all of their many forms.

I realized that I don't know much about Amp-Hours and can't recall very much discussion on here about them. So, would you be so kind to type a few responces, and then it'll all be here for whoever comes along next!

To assist the less electrically inclined, which questions need reworded or added for this to be the comprehensive work on amp-hours?

1) Define amp-hour and how it may be calculated and used.
2) Which theoretical laws are involved?
3) How do we calculate the Amp-hour of a load? How do we add them up?
4) What effect will a given load have on the battery?
5) What is the effect to the Amp-hour rating of a battery bank if we hook up the individual batteries a) in series? b) in parallel?
6) How do we calculate putting the amp-hours back into the battery?

happy coaching!

You've asked questions that books have been written about.

Two good links to answer most of your questions and some you didn't--but will--are:
http:/amplepower.com/ and http:/www.phrannie.org/battery.html

Happy reading.

Ask 100 people, get 100 different opinions. Unless u want to live like a Tibetan Monk, you can't carry enough batteries to supply your needs for any meaningful time (unless u think 2 days is meaningful, along with no A/C in the desert in the summer). My opinion for house batteries: 440 to 660 amps of Trojan deep cycles, 6v T105, series-parallel(depends on available space) and a damn good genset of 5-7kw continuous. Another of my considered opinions: don't waste your money on solar, unless you have a favorite light bulb you want to keep burning.

IN order to figure the size batt bank you need it is necessary to detirmine the LONGEST time you wish to dry camp in different conditions.

Just having a radio/TV and interior reading loghts with a couple of fans in the summer is easy.

Running some complex heater setups in the winter is daunting for more than a few hours.

YOU will need to decide how important dry camping IS to you as it will determine the equippment choices as well as the needed batt size.

A final question is as always how much $$$ you are willing to spend to maintain a good batt set in top condition , to try to get a decade from the set.

IF you DO NOT have a few hundred to properly monitor , and water , and charge the set,,
cheap-o batts from Sams Club with a warentee would be better choice , than real deep cycle stuff.

Your cash ,your call,

Thanks to all for the input!

Those two websites are quite interesting!

I will have to put a small solar panel into the mix, as my coach must be stored remote to a power plug. It's only design role will be battery maintenance while parked in the storage yard. Otherwise, solar is awfully expensive for what you get out of the wires.

I also like the Trojan referal. Used them before and just about everyone else has the same good experience.(when maintained!)

Right on FF! If I can't afford the proper maintenance and monitoring, then I can't afford batteries. In mine and your opinions, anyway!

happy coaching!
