I am trying to find the engine numbers on the 8v71 in our 1963 pd4106. There are two "pads" on the right hand (forward) side of the block near the upper edge at either end just below cyl head. These are relatively easy to see with the inside access panel removed. Both of these surfaces appear to have been machined and no numbers are evident. Does anyone have a clue as to where these numbers may be located?

Fred,

Sounds to me like you looking in the right place.

The engine model and serial numbers on on the right forward side of the engine and stamped into the block, just below the exhaust maniford. It should be 8 numbers with a dash(-) in the middle of each set of 4 numbers (XXXX-XXXX).

If you have DD 8V71 engine manual look around pages 7-9 and it has a picture of where the numbers are on the block, and also give a breakdown of the meaning of all the numbers.

If you don't have the engine manual, is your hotmail email address still good? If so I'll scan the pages and email them to you.

Thanks, I have come to the unfortunate conclusion that the block has probably been changed and the numbers machined off. My situation is thus: The idiot previous owner of my recently acquired GM PD4106 coach left straight water in the cooling system through the winter. While Georgia does not suffer severe cold, sub-freezing temps are not uncommon.
Needless to say, block damage occurred. I have found a really cheap bare block, and am trying to figure out if it is a usable replacement. The numbers on this used block are 8VA436941 / 7083-7396. This seems to be an industrial engine. The oil cooler holes are on the correct side, and it appears to be the same. The starter configuration is opposite, but the starter does not mount to the block. Do you think this will work?

Fred, not necessarily on the subject you are referring to, but I thought you should know that your bus looks like one which I was considering buying, and the previous owner told me he had put water in the oil fill not knowing the difference. Just wanted to make you aware if you didn't already know, as I'm pretty sure from the graffiti that its the same bus.

Tom, yes this is the same bus. The water in the oil is not a problem as the oil was changed several times, and engine runs fine & quiet. Their added stupidity in not adding antifreeze caused the ruination of the engine. While they now claim ignorance in "bus maintenance", I bet they have antifreeze in their car! BTW the grafitti is now removed. Fred
