I am just looking for a picture. I have a spare governor, they both
have different length "arms" that the throttle cable hooks to, I need
to find out which is the correct one.

Bob,

That looks pretty much like my '54 the best I can tell from the pic.

looking at the pic straight on from the back - I have a set screw with a lock nut facing straight back on the lower left. On the right side I have a cover over another set screw, not that cylinder type thing shown in the pic, on the left I do not have whatever that air valve is, I also have a vent pipe were a screw on cover is shown in the pic heading out the back and going down to vent below the motor. Weird huh....

Well. There are 2 different governors used on these engines. The one shown in the pic on this post is a "fuel modulating governor"... mine is a "limiting speed governor". It shows in the manual but I did not recognize the difference before. Hopefully now I can get it setup correct.

Thanks to all who helped.

Bob. you might want to get the help of a GOOD dd guy to set that up proper as it is not as simple as taking the cover off and turning nuts and screws. have you ever been close to a 6-71 when the gov. lets go into no high rpm control. man even when the parts come out side it still screams. this is why i say get some one that know what he is doing when working with your gov. and if you want to try it your self be sure that you have some way to shut it down in a hurry and do not use the emergence shut down as it will pull the seals out of the blower although it will be better that loosing the complete engine.

I had it to 2 shops, both charged me but did not set it up correctly. Today I had a DD mechanic set it up correctly. He took parts from both governors to make one that was correct. This guy has been doing these motors for 35 years and knows them inside and out. He found a lot of little problems that he fixed. The bus runs much better now, My top speed is about 73. It handles hills better than before and I am able to cruise in the mid sixties and take the hills in New England much better. It took about 3 hours to go thru everything and cost me 150 bucks. Well worth it in my book. Thanks for all your help.....

Bob, it good to see that you went to a good DD guy that knew what he was doing, as you found out there are a lot of guys out there that will tell you that ya ya i know all about DDs and only know it runs on deisel and some have even used gas to try and start them. the gov. is the biggest thing on the engine that has been changed over the years and the most damage is done to them when not set up proper. out by my shop is a 6/71 block with a broken main cap and a broken block due to a Cat/cum. mec. that set it up and of course when it went bang he claimed it was a weak engine not the guy that did not know what he was doing.

Dave - the MCI is a 6v71 with an automatic. It only has about 40,000 miles on it. It is much quicker than the GMC. Climbs a bit better, and tops out around 73 MPH. It has integral power steering and is real easy to drive. I haven't put a whole lot of miles on it. Wanna buy it.... The short of it is - I bought the GMC already converted after I had the MCI for 3 years. Life got in the way and I did not finish the MCI.... yet.
