I just finished putting an "air dam" on my Crown. I got some convayor belt and installed it were there is a provision for a full width flap just after the radiator. This is what GM I guess did to create a low pressure area ust after the radiator. Took a trip to the Cape 150 miles round trip.Something I've done 10-15 times now. On every return the temp would reach about 190.The temp never exceeded 170. The ambeint air temp however was about 70 so I am being cautiously optimistic with the results. But for now I'm pleased with the way it seems to be working |

I believe you mean before the radiator. GM's had a flap behind rear axle, but before the radiator |

For those of you who have mid-ship engined Crowns and Gilligs, Westcoach (westcoach.net) has the center mudflap available if you don't want to make one up. On the mid-ship engined Crowns and Gilligs the flap was behind the radiator and before the engine. I think because of the way the radiator is ducted, the full width flap creates a negative pressure area in the engine compartment which helps to suck air through the radiator. More air flow equals better cooling. I have a '79 Crown A-426-11. My full width flap got rotten and basically fell off. Since it rarely gets that hot here in the wet NW I haven't had a problem with overheating. I suppose if I ever take the bus to Wild Horse in August I would notice a difference however. I do know that any mid-ship Crown or Gillig in school service in CA is required to have the flap in place. Why that is so I don't know. Will a mid-ship Crown or Gillig run okay without a full width flap? Yes. Will it run better with one? Probably. Mark O. Castle Rock, WA |

I have seriously thought about putting one on my Eagle 15, where the mud flap would be just behind the drives, before the Rad. and Engine. Has anyone ever tried it. Did it work well or did it create any other problems. Comments + or - would be greatly appreciated. THANKS Arthur |

Speaking of flaps, has anyone put a flap similar to those used by GM on a MC-8? If so did it make any difference? Inquiring minds want to know. Jack |

flaps can be made from conveyor belting. you may be able get a piece cheap or free from a quarry. |
