I have a 1960 PD4104. What Sheppard steering box do I need to make the conversion to power steering. 2nd question - can I use a belt driven automotive type pump to run this? Something off a mediam duty truck maybe? |

Check with Sheppard in Penna. They have a web site. You may be able to get a rebuilt unit from them that will fit your coach. If you check around, you might find a gear drive unit that goes into hand hole above starter on bell housing. The lines can be made up from pipe run along grooves in floor under coach, with hoses at each end. |

The PD-4104 coaches can only use one model Sheppard power steering unit. Sheppard use to have the new 4104 units in stock. The power steering pump the best I recall is a Vickers VTM-42 pump with a reservoir from a any later model GMC coach. Plus there are some more parts you will need like a new pitman arm the best I recall. Hope this helps. jlv |

Hi Busnuts I'm trying to adjust the play on my power steering. I have a 1953 04. I've checked the archives and found that some of you have a adjusting nut. My question is where is the adjusting nut? Do i have to take anything apart for this adjustment? thanks edwin b 4104-230 |

Hi Edwin if you have a sheppard steering box and I would say thats what it is you will find no adjustment. The Sheppard power steering box used on the 4104 had no adjustment. I called Sheppard a little over a year ago and JL is correct they had a new replacement box for the 4104 but the pitman arm had to be replaced to use the new box as the spine count on the out put shaft is different. The cost at that time was $1400. Many in the trucking industry don't care for the sheppard steering box due to the lack of adjusting stud and opt for Ross boxs.Mr Kirby the man that owns the 4104 called night coach has installed a Ross box on his 4104 and he told me it works very well. So other boxs can be fitted to the 4104 with some effort. Tim |

Bob, find where the local transit co. does with their old buses and look under them and see what kind of power steering they had. if it mounts on the front axel near the center you should be able to adapt one to your coach.around here we got ours out of the GM transits that had been retro fitted with Shepard power steering as that is the prefered make by the local tranit co for the province of BC Canada.if you have questions just call me at 1-250-248-2766 let it ring as i do not always here it mel 4104 |

I guess my next question is - what is the part number to the Sheppard gear, and does the Vickers pump referred to above bolt up to the hand hole in the bell housing? I have the shaft for the pump already. |

I got part numbers from RH Sheppard for the Steering box and the pitman arm. I will be looking for these used or rebuilt if anyone has a line on them. I need to find out which Vickers pump to use. I have the gear drive shaft for the pump so far. It came with my bus from the PO who had intended on doing the installation at one time. |

Be aware the '04 steering box turns backwards from '06 and most transit buses. When you turn the wheel clockwise the bus will turn left if you have the wrong box installed. Could be very exciting. I have heard of the bevel gear in the gearbox at the bottom of the steering column being moved to the oposite side to reverse rotation if using the wrong power steering box; also heard of transplanting the transit steering column along with the transit power steering box as a set to get conpatibility. No personal experience with above as I bought a new 4104 box from Shepard when putting power steering in my 1953 4104. Works great. I hope I live long enough to be concerned about the lack of external adjustment in the Shepard box but I don't think so. Jim Stacy |
