Dutch.
What exactly do you mean by nothing happened?

Does the starter turn the engine over but it does not start?

Or doesn't the starter turn the engine over?

Sounds like the switch is not activating the starter relay. Or the relay is not working.

I don't know where the starter relay is on your bus. If you know where it is check it out with a volt meter.

If the starter is easy to get to, you could short across the terminals to crank it over.
Use an old screwdriver and lay it across from the big battery terminal to the small solenoid terminal. It will spark at first but the starter will run as long as you hold the screwdriver there.

Make sure you have your switch on to RUN..

My 4104 will sometime do the same .
I hit the starter switch severl times in a row and it then starts.

Must be a bad connection somewhere.

Glad your up and going, Happy Highways...

some 04's had a small relay in the voltage regulator compartment behind the pass rear wheel. If yours has it, try tapping on it while someone tries to start it. Did you mess with the remote start switches in the engine compartment when you were back there? Sometimes they need wiggeled? on and off because of dirt on the contact points. Also try tapping the starter solenoid on the starter. First, you should check the big starter solenoid on the starter with a test light to see if current is getting to the small wire when you hit the start button. If it lights, the problem is probably at the starter. If it doesn't light, then check the little relay in the voltage regulator compartment. Oh, and have you ever checked the ground connections to the body in the battery compartment? There is also a cable connection that goes through the firewall at the back of trans. Needs to be checked on both sides. Hope this is of some help.Of course it could be a bad starter button or a poor connection in the fuse panel area to your left leg when in the driver's seat. Check the starter with a test light first though to avoid wasting too much time diagnosing it.Of course, I'm assuming that the batteries aren't almost dead.

Dutch called me a few times today and I got him going for now. I had him do basically the same thing Scott said. I am going to meet with him when he gets home and have a "class" and show him some of the things he needs to know while traveling all over in his bus.

I am so glad I found this forum. I really enjoy reading the old threads and helping out when I can. I have never seen such well mannered and helpful folks in my life.

I encourage everyone to find and jot down my cell phone number in my profile. I am semi/early retired due to a bad accident. I dont do any "heavy" work anymore but enjoy helping/talking other bus nuts through any problem/concern they may have. Please don't ever hesitate to call day or night, with a problem, or just to talk buses.
Best to all,
Justin

Dutch, there are several things that can prevent the starter from engaging.

To eliminate primary problems, good batteries and good cables with good connections, both hot and ground that go all the way from the batteries to the starter, will be needed.

You cannot safely use the chassis for a ground in these buses and should not use anything lighter than 4/0 cable between the batteries and the starter.

When you press on the starter button, 12 volt power comes through the master switch and is sent to terminal 19 in the driver's electrical compartment. It goes from there to terminal 19 in the aft electrical compartment.

If the rear start switch is in the normal position, it passes the power to terminal 59 in the aft compartment and on to terminal 3 of the starter control and generator relay.

If the relay does NOT have any power on terminal 4 of the starter control relay, then the starter control relay will pull in. There would be power on this terminal (6 volts) if the alternator is producing power or there could be if there was a bad diode in the alternator.

If the starter control relay pulls in, it will pass power through terminal 2 on the relay on to the Amphenol plug going to the engine. From there, it will go to the solenoid on the starter.

If the starter is good, and it has good power, the solenoid will pull in and the engine will start.

Occasionally, the starter teeth will hit square on the face of the ring gear, and the starter will not pull in on the first press of the switch, nor will it grind. Full power is NOT applied to the starter motor until the teeth have engaged.

This is normal if it is rare. If frequent, you need to service the starter system.

All of the above depends on your wiring being the same as the original.

I'm fairly sure that I told you more than you want to know about this, but you should understand how the system works. It's supposed to keep you out of trouble.

It's awfully easy to press the starter button with the engine running, and it could cause a lot of damage.

For what it's worth.
