Dutch, it takes motor oil, the same as the engine, unless you want to experiment.

For what it's worth.

If it is the same as the 4104, and I believe it is, it takes 50wt Aviation Grade oil which is mineral oil, or break-in oil in aircraft engines.

These transmissions have oil pumps so 90wt gear lube should never be used.

All this is in the lube section of the manual.

I HAVE 62 4106 with 8v71...use same as engine...in my case straight 30...is what my original manual says although most guys use 40w. I am told should be same in both engine and tranny on either weight.

Dutch -

Per the shop manual - use the same oil you use in the engine. Simple.

However, this is one area where, if you want to spend the $$$, you can use straight 40wt synthetic oil with no harm, and possibly some improvement.

This is a puzzle to me. I assume the trans are the same in both the 4104 and 4106 but the oil is different? But maybe they aren't the same.

Very interesting!

They are different....the angle drive is on the front of the 06, and on the rear of the 04. Don't know about the internals, without a parts book, as I've never had one apart.

Gus -

The powertrain layout is different between the 4104 and the 4106, as John pointed out.

The 4104 is set up engine, clutch, transmission, bevel gears, drive shaft, rear axle.

The 4106 is set up engine, clutch, bevel gears, transmission, drive shaft, rear axle.

GM had to move the bevel gears when they discovered the greater torque output of the 8V71 was destroying the original design as used in the 4104.

The rear axle pumpkins are also off-set differently, another change made with the introduction of the V-8.

And, as I just posted in the other thread, they changed the transmission oil requirements at the same time, too.

I knew the powertrain lineup was different but does that mean the trans are different? My guess it that it isn't but that is only a guess.

Gus -

What's the model number of your Spicer?

I'll take a look at my '06's on Tuesday and we'll compare. . .

Russ,

I'll have a look tomorrow, it's raining right now and it is parked a block away near my son's home in Seattle.

Gus, the transmission number in our coach is Spicer 7145VC. I'm sure that the 4104 uses a different transmission because the bevel gears in the 4106 are built into the nose of the gearbox and the 4104 has them built into output side of the case.

For what it's worth.

Tom,

Sorry I haven't looked yet but have been very busy. I'll try to get to it tomorrow but you're probably right. I'm still curious though.

Tom,

Curiousity got me so I went out in the rain and checked, it is a Spicer 7141-A. That must have been the end of the 50wt pumpers.
