Hi. We are converting a 1977 International bus that we bought. At first, we didn't think that it would need a new stove at all but planned on buying a larger fridge and a heater. Now, we are told that to be certifiable we will need a new stove (old one has some rust) a new fridge in a new location (present one is above the gas tank) and that there are a few choices of brand names for these products. The guy installing the stuff for us has some preference but has suggested that we talk to other travellers from around the country in case some areas of the country more easily serve one or the other brand name. We are planning to travel all over Canada and to parts of the United States. The choices that he has given us for fridge and stove are Dometic and Norcold. The heater choices are Atwood and Suburban. Any advice?? Would be interested in knowing about warranty information (what areas of North America prefer to service what brands) and personal preference tips as well. We are making choices on these items in the next few days and would really value any input. Thanks, Wendy |

You are asking a question that needs more information about the bus. Will you be boon docking a lot or stay in a park all the time. If you will be a heavy boondocker, you may prefer propane unless you are very prudent in your electrical system where the stove and frige might be electric. What kind of fuel will heat your coach and will it be hot water heat or forced air? Another choice is a boat furnace which requires no electric at all. Fuels for heaters go from gasoline, to diesel and there are even some wood burners out there. The fan forced air furnaces tend to drag the battery down as the fan runs all the time. The forced water systems use a circ pump which also use some current but I am told the usage is not too bad but a concern if booning. Dometic and Norcold are very popular names in friges but you might consider an apartment sized home unit. Stoves are made by almost everyone for the coaches now, check out the RV stores. Atwood is the marine version for furnaces, all of fairly heavy, good quality, Suburban is the RV version but tend to have control card problems and at $100 a shot, you might try something else. Give us more info and maybe we can help ya.-cd |

A friend of mine , who owned the 2nd oldest coach conversion co thinks the Dometic fridges are better than the Norcold. Furnace the Suburban seems OK for a std motorhome , but be sure to purchase a new Dinosaur circuit board , OR be sure to have GREAT wiring to the furnace as low voltage kills them. You should try to figure out how your going to use the coach, RV in campground , Boondockin for weeks in the wilderness? As the interior AND systems choices will decide your ability to find the coach enjoyable . FAST FRED |

In Wendy's first post she refers to having her RV certified .... can someone provide detail about certification..... Is it necessary ? Who requires it ? What standards must be followed ? Thank you for your assistance. |
