What is the proper procedure for placing the 4 speed spicer in reverse? Hit the reverse switch and move the stick from neutral to 2nd/reverse? or is there another procedure. Whatever I am doing I can not seem to get it in reverse. I checked the solonoid and it moves the lever about an inch. Should it move more than that?

Thanks

If the linkage is out of line a little or a weak solenoid will cause that if you are doing it like Doug mentioned and it still doesn't want to go in.

The procedure you described is exactly how it says to put it in reverse, my Eagle manual. Once in reverse remove finger from button, engage clutch. Do Not Leave Button pushed in, could damage the solenoid coil. I do not how far it should move the lever though. You might try moving the shift lever from any gear, back to neutral, hit switch, engage cluth, move to second (reverse). Hope this helps some.

The procedure from the book is to put it in first gear, then operate the switch, then put it in second gear and release the switch

Len, Why is it differant on my Eagle? Same transmission and solenoid, or are they totally differant. Because my book says differant. Just would like the correct answer. Or are we both correct?

I really don't know why the instructions would be different, it is the same trans. Perhaps shifting into first makes sure the trans has stopped spinning before going into reverse.
I don't think it makes a lot of difference. If it shifts smoothly into reverse by whatever method you are using, it should be OK.

Len, Thanks for the information. I just wanted a clarification in case of a miss print. Really did not want to screw it up. Your point abut spinning makes sense, although I think I will continue the way my manual describes to shift into reverse. Opinions of others are important to me, as I have only owned my Eagle for 4 years. Many more have much more experience than I.

Robert, sometimes the bolts that hold the solenoid on become loose. If this happens the arm will not move enough to engage second. The arm from the solenoid was worn on my 05 and I had to fill some air space between the two with baling wire wrapped around at the arm. That was 10 years ago, so the baling wire is still working.

I have found with my PD4104, when I shift into first, then actuate the reverse switch, I can feel the solenoid in the shift lever as it sets itself for reverse, then I proceed from first to the 2nd gear position and reverse.
