Firearms of any kind. If you get caught it is called smuggling. The RCMP will protect you. Ed |

RJ I believe the passport is necesary only if flying into / out of the US. When driving, be sure to take photo ID, birth certificate, drivers lisence, etc I was in Mexico several weeks ago, no passport required. I hope the same is true of Canada, as I will be traveling there in a couple of weeks - no time to get passport!!! Mark |

If you are going to Alaske there is some provision to take a hunting rifle thru Canada but I do not remember what it is. But you had better get it, otherwise they turn you around and you have to go back to a place that will mail your weapon back to your home. Do not ask me how I know. Richard |

You don't need a passport to enter Canada. I believe you were supposed to have a passport to enter the US by land or air by now but I think the deadline was extended. Anything you get here will be guesses and what you see online may not be correct. If it was me I'd be phoning the border crossing where you plan to cross and asking the guy who will be letting you back into the country. I dunno about you but when I go away I carry a passport regardless of whether it is "required". I want to be damn sure that when I get back to the Canadian border they will recognize me and let me back in. If they don't let me into your county I'll be p'd off but I'll get over it. If they don't let me back into Canada then I've got a large problem. As far as weapons go you can bring long guns but no handguns. There may be some hoops to jump through but if you have a good story about hunting you will probably get them in. Just don't even hint that they are for personal protection. |

I just drove my bus from Anchorage to Twin Falls, Idaho. Canadian customs only wanted to know if I had guns, alcohol, or tobacco on board, and didn't ask to see any documents. Re-entering the US required me to show proof of citizenship - birth certificate or passport. No problem. |

Passport for air travel is in place now. Passport for land crossing is scheduled for end of 2007, unless delayed again.... real likelyhood, as there are many, many people in both countries who cross and don't have one. Enough people to make a real problem for the passport issuers... As noted, the birth certificate and photo id, military id etc will still do the job on the ground. Beware, driver's licence alone is no proof of citizenship, and never has been. Do not confuse officer discretion with the rules or you be mighty sorry! When wearing one of those other hats, I get to sign the taxi chit when they get turned back at Buffalo/Fort Erie on the line run... happy coaching! buswarrior |

Oops, my bad. Was at our local branch post office today, one which has a passport application office. Talked with the lady at the window, and she said the deadline is now January 1, 2008. Sorry about the mis-information. . .

Russ, I thought that it was February, not January, that we would need passports to come home from Canada and Mexico. We did know we would need them early next year. Tom Caffrey PD4106-2576 Suncatcher Ketchikan, Alaska |

Last time I crossed many years ago, pets were problems too. You will want to make sure you stop on the US side before crossing and decale any property you are bringing across that might be difficult bringing back. It is simple and saves time coming back across. I did this for a bunch of tools and a racing motorcycle that was not registered in the US. For my dog I took a picture the day before I left with me and the dog and a local newspaper, to prove no shananaganz. |
