I have glossed over this topic here before, but didn't think I would need this info - until now... The only thing I could find in the archives was from JohnMC9 regarding internet use with Verizon. I have Cingular. Does anybody here use Cingular and have the capability to connect to the internet with their cell phone? I went to Cingular website, seems only the PDA style phones are compatible. I just purchased a new phone that I'm happy with. Don't want to buy a Blackberry. Can a Cingular phone be used as a modem?... Thanks! Mark | ||

Hello Mark, if you have a data package with your provider you can download the instructions on your perticular type of phone and set it up to work as a modem, you will need some interface software (which is free) and a data cable for your phone as well as some other info on your phone. If you cannot find the instruction through google just email me the make and model of your phone and I will look it up for you. | ||

Thanks for the offer, Gerald I don't believe I currently have a data package. My phone is a Samsung SGH A707 I like it a lot. Has a camera (2+ megapixel) and an MP3 player. 1Gig memory card. I was hoping to not have to pay any extra to Cingular for the service; just my usual monthly fee. I am only going to be interested in using this internet connection on rare occasions. Mark | ||

Hey Mark, Although Cingular/ATT frowns upon such 'tethering' activity, I often use my Nokia 6820, with Bluetooth to connect my Dell laptop to the internet while on the road. The speeds vary from dial up to 310kbps. My unlimited data plan cost 24.95 a month extra, but I can change that at any time without affecting my contract. Mark - Don't bother asking your cellphone provider, they'll only tell you that you can't do it for free..... Most of us are using it for free, and it's no big deal. Data is data, regardless if it's voice gone digital, or computer generated. It uses the same voice minutes provided with your plan. A ton has changed since I started using our LG4400 for Internet connections five or so years ago, so the newer phones may or may not be compatible. I refused to upgrade to a newer phone, since a pal told me that the new model LG doesn't support the modem technology.. My phone works fine to this day, and I'd like to keep it that way..... Just post your make and model phone (and your carrier) here, and let someone here get you the info... | ||

Great!! Thanks for the suggestions / help. I've orded the data cable & accessories. One more question from a big dummy... After I get the cable, etc, and get the phone hooked up so as to use for a modem, where do I 'call' with the phone to get the WWW? At home I have high speed provided by the phone company. That's not a simple question! With Verizon, the "dial-up" number is #777, and connects directly into the Internet. I can just dial and surf.... (and at remarkably fast speeds!) To access our own web site (for service, etc), I use our Internet Provider (it's also our web host) dial-up number. The connection is s l o w, but allows me direct access. To send mail from my computer using our own provider's system, I -must- be connected directly to our provider. (I could use the web access E-mail also, but it's cumbersome) If your cellphone provider has a specific number to dial (I heard that most use #777), all you'll need is the correct name and password to use, and you'll be in. That info is available on the web.... Your home "hi speed" service is something you'll have at home; it'll be waiting for you there, unless you don't pay 'em. Do yourself a big favor, tho.... After you get the cellphone all set up and ready to go, use it for about 15 minutes, and wait to see if it shows up on your bill. There's been some recent horror stories about being billed for using the cellphone company's own Internet access (that #777 number). If you have an Internet Provider (we use dialup4less.com), you can connect to that, (usually) for no extra cellphone charges, since it's only data (like voice), and not the use of the cellphone company's system. John, are you still able to connect to Verizon like that? I used to do it all the time (especially free nights and weekends) but haven't been able to do it in a while. I was always amazed with how fast the connection was too! If you can still connect with #777, I'd appreciate any tips you might have to help me do it again. Thanks, Dale |
