I have a 1989 Prevost XL. Has anyone put the generator in the engine compartment on the passenger side where the A/C compressor was. The Onan quite 8.0 diesel will fit right in there.

Thanks,

my Eagle 10 has an 8KW Wrico in that very spot. with insulation and soundproofing it has worked very well. mine has a small 10" electric fan installed on the grate of the compartment door, and as long as the genset is running, the fan is on and sucking lots of hot air out of the compartment. it helps to keep it cool, and so far, not a single heating problem for the generator or my 6v92.

Thanks for the responses and yes maintenance would be more difficult, but putting it on a slide will help and the advantage of being back there, would free up 1/2 of a bay. That is quite a saving.

I also had mine in that location on an Eagle. I really do not see how it would be a problem working on the main engine. Mine was on a pivot and there was lots of room available if needed. It seems like a great location to me.
I closed the grate up and pulled fresh air from the bottom and then out the back. Got rid of the noise from the side of the bus.

Only downfall would be if it's not in a soundproof box of sorts, you WILL hear it below you IF you need it while sleeping!

I agree with Ace, I don't want my genset under my bedroom floor.

Have lots of soundproofing over the engine and the onan quite diesel has soundproofing. Does anyone have the generator running while they sleep? I had not thought of that, and don't know why you would need to, unless you need the A/c's on I guess.

I spend literally dozens of nights at Flying J's with the genset running all night for the A/C. I commuted from Pasadena to Ft. Lauderdale for several years between offices. With a well insulated bus and genset there is little or no noise from the genset into the coach. Definitely not enough to affect sleeping as far as I am concerned. And any low rumble tends to muffle out any other outside noise. BTW, my wife never had a problem with it either. It really depends on how your affected by the very low noise/vibration.

Thanks for the responses. My generator will go back by the engine. The loudest noise in the night will be my snoring anyway, maybe I should put the generator up by the bed and put me in the engine compartment. Saving 1/2 of a bay is just to good to pass up.

Ray, Good Luck and you will be fine,
First night out you will not be awaken by the genset, but rather by the Reefer Unit on the truck parked next to you,

Maybe that is just my luck.
