My husband is callling me without any internet from his cell phone he's broke down needs info on where the air govener is. He thinks thats the problem. He stopped for fuel and it wouldn't bring the air back up. He also wandered if it is a bad air compressor. He is in Hershey Nebraska right now if someone could call him with some help we would appreciate it. He is driving a 1968 Prevost. The Engine is a Detroit 8v71 geer driven air compressor. 503-842-0155 |

I called, got voice mail, left message indicating location and description of compressor governor and my home phone No. Obviously could be major leak in suspension, brakes, air drier, etc. Governors are now made in China, are mostly universal, interchangable and cheap. last one I bought new was less than $25. |

Have him listen underneath while running for air leaks. I had a stuck valve of some sort not allowing my bus to air up twice now. Guess I should look into replacing that. |

Hello Mrs. Mark, We need a little more info to make a long range diagnosis. Specifically, does the bus have ANY air pressure while running? If it will make maybe 50 psi while revved up in neutral, but no more, that is either a large leak, or a compressor governor failure. Absolutely NO air pressure is a broken compressor or drive. I guess the outlet pipe off the compressor could have broken, or the first reservoir exploded, but that would be obvious. To explain why I asked about pressures, we can all start our buses with no air pressure at all, and the pressure will begin to build, right? (Somebody's going to kill me, but I'm just explaining how a comp and gov work, sorry.) The governor uses air pressure to UNLOAD the compressor, so it has to HAVE pressure to do that, otherwise the comp wouldn't pump when starting a bus or truck with no air... What this means is that a gov stuck in the unload position will still cause SOME pressure to build, until there's enough pressure to unload the comp, how much I don't know. So, if the bus is sitting there with NO air, BIG leak or bad comp. With air, simple test, take the unloader line, (small hose from the governor) off the comp, and fire up. !WATCH THE AIR GAUGES, BECAUSE THE COMP WON'T STOP! If the comp pumps, bad gov, if it doesn't, bad comp, or a stuck unloader in the comp. Air flow out the unloader line means the gov is trying to unload the comp. If the bus has no air pressure at all, it CAN'T be the gov. HTH, George |

Mark called me back 6/10 about 10 pm. He was in a truck stop. No mechanic on duty since it was Sunday, but he was safely off the road. We covered a basic primer in bus compressed air systems in this new (to him) bus. He was able to find the remote mounted compressor governor and an air leak in the compartment under the driver's seat. Interestingly enough, the previous owner had installed a 110 volt air compressor in case of emergency! Perhaps this was not the first air problem with this coach. I covered the front air systems with him, air throttle, wipers, air park, driver seat, brake foot valve, hoses, and actuator, front tanks and drains, air horn, leveler valve,etc. He seemed comfortable with trouble shooting for leaks. Hmmm....well a month and a half ago i couldn't build any air pressure and Detroit Diesel replaced my governor and got me back on the road. |
