The power steering system that was installed on my bus has rubber hoe all the way from the engine to the front. The way it was routed is less then ideal and hangs down in 2 places. (I've tied it up temporarly) I would like to replace/reroute the lines and figured that if I'm going to pull it all out I would rather replace the rubber hose with as much steel line as possible. Where can I get steel lines? |

you can use water pipe of the appropriate size- will work fine- use hoses at each end. Pipe will fit in grooves in underside of baggage floor, up out of sight.Flush them out before hooking to system, of course. |

OK, here goes, as you already have the hyd. hose it is very cheap to fix. go to your local building supply store and get some thin wall conduit and 2 couplins and 4 end d with metal lock nuts, borrow a conduit bender and put an s bend on 2 pieces of the conduit about one foot from the end as you want the conduit to lay in the center grove under the bay floor, lay the conduit out with the s bend so that it sticks into the front wheel well by one inch. join the conduit too gether and put another s bend on that end so that it will allow the conduits to clear the end bulk heads front and rear then cut to length so that you have one inch sticking out passed each bulk head. make a braket of 1/8 al. plate hang the conduits from it with a u clamp that you can make with ready rod the width of the 2 conduits , do this at each end, underneith make flat straps to hold the pipe up between the groves. now pull a fish line through use sstring strong enough to pull the hose through, be sure to use lots of liquid soap in the pipe at the end you are feeding in the hose from and apply lots to the hose as it is pulled in as it is a way better than using grease, be sure to have some one pushing the hose in as you pull the fish string. as it sounds like you have the hose just undo one end of each hoseand replace it when you have it in place. use a conduit that is 1/4 bigger than the hose not bigger than the fittings. if you have pressed fitting on each end you will have to cut one end off each hose and put the hand type on that are easy to put on with a couple wrenches. be sure that when you cut the hose be sure that you use painters masking tape apply 1 1/2 inches on either side of the cut point so that the braid will not spread apart, use an angle grinder to cut the house , use a zip cut blade and do a straight cut, now put your fitting on over the masking tape when you have it slipped on take off the tape and put the fitting together. easy hay what????? heck it toke me longer to try typing this than it should take you to do it. any thing else just ask ... |

Mel, That is a great way to hold the lines up and protect them. My lines are made up of short hoses connected together. (several 8-10ft hoses) I have one hose that is oozing a little fluid and thought that if I'm going to drain the system to install a new hose I may as well replace the hoses with steel lines. I suppose I could use black pipe with fittings on the ends to connect a short hose, but I was wondering if there is someplace to get steel lines. . |

__. The discussion here is very good but I'd add that power steering pumps are notorious for pulsating vibrations that cause the power steering lines to rattle. Mel's way looks like a good way to prevent this becoming a problem but I'd be sure that anything that I did was well secured (clips, cable ties, etc.). |

The pipe is the cheapest and most reliable if you are starting from scratch. If that hose develops a leak inside of the conduit, you have to pull it all out to find it, or many connections are more spots to leak. But it will work either way. |

I have been useing pipe under the bays for almost 20 years. Never a problem, but we use black pipe. Don't know if it made a difference but has worked well. Short rubber line on each end. |

Thanks everbody for the information. I think that if black pipe will work I'll go with that, and then use hose at either end to go to the components. . |
