Can anyone tell me the HP and torque ratings of the DD S50 4cyl. in highway bus application. I know a few MCI A3 & C3 had them but have found nothing that specs them as compared to the 6v92. Also, what are the CID/cylinder. I seem to recall 112/cylinder and was wondering if they are adequate for power in an intercity. Any advice and opinions welcome here. thnks Jim Maxwell Grumman 870 |

i drive a gillig low floor for avis part time, and they have the series 40's (international diesels) in them. theyre pretty peppy, plus the rtd here in denver sold a bunch of neoplans that had series 50's in them and they were real peppy, very comparable to a 6v92 only drawback is they dont sound like a bus, only the 2 strokes sound like buses, call me nostalgic but hey what can we do. anyway sorry its not the specs you wanted but just my little bit of input. AS I understand it the series 40 is the Intl DT 466 with green paint. These have been used with great sucess by the truckers for 25 30 years. Newest versions are 300 hp Turboed , Aftercoold For some applications there 530? Cubic inches These are really great engines , smooth , and before DD got them a rebuild kit was about $700. Series 50's were used in MC-12's (late-model MC-9's with minor changes) for the last 2 years of production. 315 hp, I think 1150 lb-ft torque, very comparable to a 6V92TA. Basically, the 50 series is a 60 with 2 cylinders sawed off. Not perfect engines - some valvetrain issues - and a swap involves nightmare plumbing and wiring, since they only come in electronic flavor. B-500 or ZF or Eaton electronic manual transmissions are the way to go - the narrower torque curve on the 50 series means that a HT740 will murder your fuel economy, as well as acceleration. |
