I'm taking my 4106 6V92TA through Colorado this summer. Is there anything in particular to know about taking the bus over 11,000-ft passes. I got the downhill part. I'm wondering about the effect of the air density on the diesel. I assume Greyhound and Trailways did this every day so I suppose there's no issue. Just manage the temperature, right?

I'm told you should pack: Breakfast, lunch, supper, for the trip up.

John -

That's if you're driving a stock 6-71 powered coach! :-)

Steve -

Yes, watch the temps.

Also the exhaust - heavy black smoke is overfueling = hot engine quickly. Back out of the throttle slightly to see if the smoke clears and you can maintain the pull. If you speed starts falling off at the lighter throttle, downshift manually to the next lower gear. (ALWAYS downshift manually when pulling a grade with an automatic - much easier to keep the engine in the sweet spot that way.)

Two-strokes will pull all day long at 1700-1900 rpm on a partial throttle and not overheat. You should still be able to accelerate slightly from this rpm range, but don't. . . just keep it there and your Detroit will thank you.

Don't be in a hurry, and you'll have a great time.

FWIW & HTH. . .

:-)

6-92TA.........I would pay close attention to temps...and if you have not upgraded your cooling system I suspect you may get warm to Hot

We did Colorado passes North of Durango 2 years ago in July. Gorgeous! It was slow with the 4-71. She smoked quite a bit and had noticebly less power than at lower elevation. There is also less air density going through the rad to cool it. So it was 2nd gear, at times 1st gear. You pull off for traffic when you can and enjoy the scenery. I now have a turbo, which improves the altitude situation by a great deal.

Thanks guys.

The 6V92 was installed at Southern Oregon diesel and a larger radiator was part of the install.

I suppose the turbo offsets the altitude issue somewhat. No problem going slow. I like it :-)

Last year I was climbing a 10 percent grade at 10 thousand feet with my 06 (8V71 318 propane enhanced VS2-8) A good runner could have out run me but no heat problems. The scary part was going down with tight turns.>>>Dan
