hi all, again and so soon. I have tried to ajust my slack asizers and the wrench just slips off (nearly sripted) the bolt. how dose one go about freeing, adjusting, or replacing the slack adjusters. oh one more question. the drivers side parking brake is sticking have to free it with a pry bar after the brakes are released. I can see it now get fuel, lay in fuel puddel, strip in parking lot move bus. I have a '64 silver eagle model 01, and yes it had dd3 brakes which i just had apart cleaned and regreased. tanks jack of maine (the snow has finally melted) |

Slack adjusters are not very difficult to adjust. The trick to making an adjustment is to makr sure the adjuster lock has been pushed in.The adjuster will not move before the lock is depressed. Some times the lockring must be depressed with the wrench in place and tapped with a hammer. Some penetrant oil is good also. After the lock ring has beed depressed, first loosen the adjuster about a good 3/4 turn. To adjust the bolt, tighten the bolt till the bolt is snug, then still holding lockring in, loosen the adjuster about 1/2 turn. This will make good brakes and linings will not drag. Carefully adjust all brakes the same. Bus should be parked level with spring brakes released. Frank |

John - In addition to what Frank said, make sure you've got the wheels chocked when adjusting the brakes so the coach doesn't roll. DD3s have a specific sequence required to release them: ~~ Build air pressure to governor cut-out, usually 120 psi. ~~ With your foot just resting only on the service brake pedal, push IN parking brake knob. ~~ After pushing in knob, make a FULL service brake application and hold for five seconds, then release. Brakes should release after following this sequence. Once and awhile you may need to do another full service brake application to get them to release, but not usually. If they continue to fail to release, there's a mechanical problem with a brake can. DO NOT set the parking brake with your service brakes applied any further than necessary to keep the coach from rolling. Doing so makes them that much harder to release. FWIW & HTH. . .

Hello Jack. Also note that you have to be careful to turn the adjusting nut in the proper direction for each wheel. Depending on the orientation of the adjuster to the brake components, it may be left or right turning. Make sure you are tightening the brakes against the drum, not loosening them all the way off. After adjusting, it is a good practice to measure the applied brake chamber pushrod stroke to make sure you have done it right. Of those who previously did not measure their efforts, some found that their previous "backing off" methods were leaving a longer stroke than they had intended. happy coaching! buswarrior |

John, use a 9/16 box and a hammer. Put the box on the adjuster and drive it on with the hammer to release the lock, then turn the adjuster to bring the brakes into adjustment. I prefer my longer wrenches for this as sometimes the adjuster will stick a little. The shoes that are sticking may need to have the return spring replaced. |

hi all,thanks for the help. I found that you have to push in, from what I gathered here, I might hit the wrench like i was breakin a tight bolt. Now that the brake are backed off all the way and no where neer the drum tile to go for a ride in the mountains. ( just kidding) I have backed off one eighth a turn after bottoming out. that shoud do it for now. jack. it was fun rolling it up on blocks. |

obtw. the drivers side break still wont release when asked. did the above proceedures 120psi release wait and hold for 10 sec. must be in the can or the lever needs greasing something like that. |
