My 64 m01 silver eagle smokes when it starts when cold any morning. one side stops after a few miutes after of ideling. the other continues to kill the bugs in the woods and neighbors with white smoke till warm. i wanted to know could this just be a valve adjustment? the crazy thing is the engine runs amazing smooth.

I thing i will check on mr taylor, i have not heard from him since i last ran the bus to full warm up.

John,
Absolutely no such thing as a stupid question here, at least in my opinion.
Humor is also greatly appreciated.
I assume Mr. Taylor is/was your neighbor?
A guess is a worn engine, with one side worse than the other. The info on "runs amazing smooth" is very helpful. It rules out fuel vapor from a non-firing cylinder, which is white also. White smoke out of BOTH sides, continuous, until warm, COULD be leaking blower seals.
Unfortunately for you (and Mr. Taylor) a valve adjustment won't help the smoke.
This post will generate a LOT of opinions, as soon as people get off work, etc.
Let us know if Mr. Taylor is OK!

If you take it out for a ten mile run and then let it idle for 30 seconds, is the exhaust clear or with a very slight amount of blue/grey/ black smoke? Anything more than that probably indicates worn rings or blower seals. A good condition 8-71 will start with a turn or two with, at most a second ot two of smoke, then be clear. If the temp is below 60 degrees, the time to clear will be longer, but should not more than a minute. Plug in the block heater a while and then start it. Good engine will start clean. The more wear in rings the longer to clear up if at all. Of course you can also get into blower seals, tune-up cracked heads etc. Worn out Detroits will really have a lot of power if tune is ok and otherwise ok. Ask any trucker that ran Detroits. They would complain after a major overhaul that they didn't have the power they used to have.BTW they will smoke more from extended idling without taking them out for a run also.

The white smoke from one side suggests to me unburned fuel maybe from faulty or misadjusted injector. Smell it, does it smell like fuel?
I agree with John. Take the bus out & run it up at highway speed for an hour (30 minutes , turn around & return is O.K.). It needs to get at highway speed for an hour. An all day trip is better.
Then park it with out idling more than 4-5 mihutes. Start it up the next day. (It will take overnight for that 4,000 lbs of iron to get cold.) If it smokes blue/grey it will be oil. If white, it's fuel. (If it does, I would pull the injectors & have them serviced, then reinstall, set the valves & rack & recheck. By the way you WILL get smoke after R & R the injectors as oil runs into the cylinders as you remove the injectors so you probably would run the highway & test again. These are valid reasons, not excuses, to go for a bus ride!

Most likely, the fuel rod adjustment on the smoking side is a bit on the loose side. When you start it up cold, feel the exhaust manifold on the side that is smoking and see if the 4 ports stay cool longer than the non-smoking side.

Please keep the opinions comming I llike the input. No word on mr. taylor yet, but his car moved the other day. Waiting on the registration to come in i can then test it. the bugs are less now though. the good side (drivers) clears in abou 2 minutes. I will check the temp on the exhaust manifolds. I remember last year and the one time I brought it up tp temp the smokey side looked a little blue/grey but i am nit sure that the engine is wornout yet. this is not the blue smoke that you might see from gassers. and man it smells like straight unburned fuel.
