I have discovered a slight leak coming from the vent hole on the drive axle of my '83 MC-9. Can anyone tell me the brake mfg. and/or type of canister? I think replacing the diaphram should solve the problem. Also, with all leaks fixed, how often should the air compressor cycle on & off? Thanks in advance.

Richard, I also have a MC-9 and would like to know how often the air compressor should cycle on and off. I guess it depends on how air-tight your system is.

I've received excellent service from MCI on parts for my MC-8. For this type of part, that's where I would go.

Mr Jones, your MCI coach is equipped with Bendix
DD-3 Safety Actuators or brake chambers,
If you hear an air leak from the vent hole with the parking brakes applied you have a fairly serious problem, as possibly both air diaphrams are leaking
If air is leaking from the vent hole while the parking brakes are released, you have a failing o-ring in the lock/release mechanism and it should be remedied, if not you suddenly may not be able to release your parking brakes at all( it will happen at the worst possible time)Exchanged units are available from MCI or other reputible coach parts distributors.
If you are not familiar with these units I suggest you do not attempt rebuilding them yourself, Be prepared when they quote you an exchanged price!

Just another quick note, MCIs use type 30 DD-3s which are slightly larger in diamter than those used on many models of the GM coaches (type 24 DD-3s, different size diaphrams) DD-3s are easy to recognize because there will be three (3) air lines connected to the chamber. If there are only two air lines, someone has converted the coach to spring brakes (augh). If it is a spring brake and it is leaking air from the vent hole, the parking diaphram is leaking and I suggest you get some experienced help (its got a very large and nasty spring inside and it is not forgiving to the in-experienced) There is a way to physically 'cage' the spring, but again I urge you to seek experienced help!!!!

Thanks for the info on MCI's brake chambers.
