European company chosen to supply Canadian buses
The federal minister responsible for the Montreal region told The Gazette he was simply following federal government rules designed to save taxpayers money and in this case it was "a significant amount."
Fortier noted Setra Coaches, a German subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler, offered to manufacture up to 30 buses for $25,000 less each than Quebec's Prevost Car Inc. and Motor Coach Industries Ltd. of Winnipeg.

Unfortunately municipal and federal governments often seem neglect to take in to account the impact on domestic industries, their employees, as well as the tax revenue contibuted by them and the possbile differences long term costs of maintaining a fleet of vehicles from offshore.

I concur on all accounts.
The cost of replacement parts from foreign sources is an often overlooked issue.

Yeah you have good points, but look at the bright side! They are getting awesome buses from a quality manufacture! I love my Setra's & the service and parts people are top notch too! Where as with MCI it takes an act of congress to get any help! We only got one MCI left and as soon as someone offers enough $ I'll say bye-bye too it too! FWIW BK |
