I am new to posting on this site but have read the archives for a couple of years. I need to find a good dd mechanic for my 4104 in the central Calif area. Also the front windshield gasket needs to be replaced. The glass itself is great but the gasket is trash. Our local glass Co. said it would be a minimum of $190.00 labor only to install the new gasket but will not guaranee against glass breakage. This said, I was wondering if I should try it with a couple of other guys as helpers or if this is too tricky for the do it yourselfer. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Also thanx to all the busnuts out there helping others with their problems. It helps others also. Also thanx to you Ian for getting me set up so I can be a contributer. |

ken,
since you have a GM I would suggest taking your bus to Coach Maintenance in Williams, CA. ted and his crew maintain the buses for the pacific bus museum, and he knows GM coaches almost better than general motors themselves it seems. haha. if you call, you should probably do it around 6-7pm, as ted works all night and sleeps most of the day. email works too. it would be well worth your trip, seeing as he has about 40 buses in his lot, ranging from fishbowls, 4104's, 4106's, 4108's, 4905's and even a 4501(the first scenic I ever met in person), and he's happy to show them all off(and most of them are in perfect running order, too).

hey Ken; luke at us coach has new gaskets for about anything that has glass. His no. is 888-262-2434 and he will ship quick. |

Ken, Lukes crew installed ours very quickly, 2 guys but they did know what they were doing and had the tools to do it. I don't think it took much over an hour if that long to do both on our 4106. $190 sounds steep. Denis |

Kyle, thanx for the info on coach maintenance in Williams. I'll call Ted up one evening and see if I can get her up there for him to check it out sometime soon.

Ken, I would try Kyles man to see if he can recommend someone in your area like Modesto maybe. The closer to home you can find a mechanic the better. Luke has taken good care of all of us at one time or another. I try to support him when I need something. Im pretty close to Williams over in Chico if you need any help. |

Dilip, I have tried to find someone locally here around Modesto to no avail as of yet. I thought for sure I would find someone in either Stockton or Modesto but not yet. I will look you up if ever in the area around Chico. Thanx lots!!! |

If you have to spend that much, you might as well put in a new windshield with it. You could check with an area bus company. A mechanic there should be able to do it for you if you get the new gasket. Many of them replace their own glass. |

John, The existing glass looks great with no breaks or cracks. It must have been replaced sometime prior to my buying the bus but I don't think the gasket was replaced when that must have been done. Thanx for the input!!! |

Be careful when removing the old windshields. A fellow busnut told me to use a spray bottle with water and soap to coat the rubber gasket before attempting to remove the glass. I need to do mine also when I fix the breastplate on our Eagle. Waiting on my gasket material from Silver Eagle Bus. I sure don't want to spend the extra bucks for new glass. If it breaks, guess what, $$$$ again.

Remember all 4104 and up and 49 series GM buses use the same windshield. This is also the same piece of glass used in the windshield of many 96" Prevosts and the Prevost side glass that curves into the roof. They are also interchangeable right to left so do not come with dark tint across top of glass. They come with light even tint and dark even tint (most side glass is dark).
A local bus line that uses Prevosts sold me glass for just over $100 each installed. I didn't ask for a receipt. New gasket came from Coach Services. HTH

After you have the new gasket in hand, CUT the old rubber to get the windshield out, after removing the bead. Old rubber is hard and may break or crack glass, because it won't flex properly. |

Hey Ken,
You've received a lot of good advice here! Orange Belt Stages out of Visalia and Storer Coach out of Modesto have been around for years. If you find the parts, they might be able to help with the installation.
However, I would also strongly recommend calling/emailing Ted at Coach Maintenance in Williams. I was there about 2 weeks ago, and I'm pretty sure he has the windshield rubber & filler/locking-strip in stock...ready to go.
Regarding windshields, the other guys are correct, but you can also add that, along with the GM 4903,4905,H8H649, and narrow-body Prevost LeMirage XL's, your windshield will also fit a GM 4106, 4107, and 4108. The glass is still readily available...Ted has those sitting around as well!

Steve, thanx for the input. Yes I am very thankful for all of the advice from each of you guys and I had planned on trying to hook up with Ted in Williams.
