I need some input. I am sure this has been posted before. I searched a bit but didn't find my answers. Cindy and the kids want to buy me a new drivers seat - so I can comfortably haul them across the country! Truth is they say I am getting OLD and need a rocking chair!!! I have the big 4-0 coming up in a couple weeks... Anyhow - I have looked at flex-steels but they seem like they are for RV's, I looked at ISRI - too much like the ISRI I have, I looked at National Seats with the back massager? sounds like a nice idea...? Sears, Recaro, and I looked at others... now i have no idea which one is right. A note - I am small - 135 pounds... don't need one of the wide ride ones, or the heavy duty driver ones... just want one a bunch comfier then the ISRI I have. All ideas as usual are welcome... PS: when I get some time I will post costs on the Overheating issues we had....

Thanks, John

Stock seats from any charter or line (transit) bus should
suffice. They were designed to keep the driver alert, attentive,
and relaxed, by companies that demanded no less.

You can't compare a driver's seat designed for occasional
RV usage, to one designed for long-haul passenger transit.

John, the typical RVer needs a seat that keeps him on edge, sleepy, and angry about having the coach in the first place. Maybe an orange crate would suffice.

I like my air ride seat, thought of changing to RV style, changed my mind. I have to much to do than get too relaxed. Have to keep both hands on the wheel as I have armstrong steering. The idea of having our reupholstered caught my wifes eye, go figure, so will plan to do that to match whatever SHE wants. LOL

As soon as I can sell my skydiving gear, I'm going to have these guys http://www.discountvantruck.com/rvhighbackcaptainsseats/motorhomefurnitureDeleon.htm
build a seat for me with lumbar, heat and massage.
Mounted on a 6 way power base, then on top of an air ride should make for a seat I can stay in for a while.

I went with the National seats with the back massager. I can tell you that they are great. My legs (they are 62 - well past 4-0) feel great even after a day of driving. National is in TN (a US company) and when I needed matching material for other upholstery needs they sold it to me at a great price.

The big, deep, soft, cushy, laid back seats feel great when you first get in them. After 500 miles you're so stiff you need help to get up. There is a reason the comercial seats are firm and supportive. A good quality air ride seat, PROPERLY adjusted, will get you through the trip safely and comfortably.

You didn't say what you dislike about the ISRI.

Thanks Guys for all the input... I do have one of those orange crates - perhaps I will give it a try! Not! The ISRI is setup for a large driver... I know the air ride is good for the driver but the current seat just doesnt have enough adjustments for a smaller driver. I literally have to tilt it as far forward as it can go and still have to leave my left leg swing... I have thought about putting a wooden stool on the left side to rest my foot! I was leaning towards the National seat with the massager and the power adjustments... I dont want a cushiony lounge chair and the RV style flex steels really wont fit into the cockpit area very well. I mainly need one that I can make adjust for me. I do want the lumbar adjustments as I do get the lower back pain while sitting there for a while. I also read a post where someone put in a seat from a Chrysler and turned it a little towards the door, so that his foot wasnt stretched to the right as much... I was thinking of doing that with mine, whether or not I get a new seat. Thoughts on that? Also, thankfully my eagle is smooth enough to drive one handed... no real strong arming on the highways, but backroads and rural turns... thats another story...

John -

Recaros are excellent, but. . .

Most drivers complain about the seat cushion not being thick enough to support their bum. Lots of adjustments, tho. . .

Another comfortable commercial seat is the USSC. Harder to find than an ISRI or Recaro, but out there. Quite common in transit buses, available with and without air ride.

http://www.usscgroup.com/main.html

(Manuals and literature available in .pdf form for downloading, too.)

We had very few drivers complain about these seats at the transit system I worked at, once they learned how to adjust them properly.

FWIW & HTH. . .

:-)

RJ,

Thanks for the info. I will look into the USSC seats.

John
I used the middle row bucket seat (leather) out of a 2002 KIA van, that I totaled. Have used it for about 5K miles. I just put it on top of the air ride pedistal, its manual with two arm rests, wish now it was the drivers seat, but i didn't have it. 4905larry

You can by an eight way electric seat out of a town car from almost any junkyard and pay $50 bucks, recover it and add a mount for the seat and you are on your way. Total investment about $175 bucks.

Maybe an orange crate on an air ride pedestal would work.

Perhaps for a real busnut - we can mount a toilet seat on that air ride orange crate for comfort. - maybe one of those soft cushioned vinyl ones....

Naw-the unsanded oak ones work best!! Oh, and in this ONE CASE; the seat remains down. Anyway, the main point is to, at least, procure an air-ride seat base and then install the seat of your choice
