I am curious about the number of us who gravitate towards or are captivated by auto racing and what type(s) you prefer, and how often do you and your coach make it to an event? Seeing the numbers of coaches grow expotentially over the last few yrs. at race tracks, it seems there is some "cross pollenation" between the two. Anyone here involved in both? |

I am a race fan. I hold tickets for both NASCAR races at New Hampshire. I also try to attend at least one other winston race a year. |

I started building a 65 GTO for NHRA "Super GAS" class racing a couple of years ago. The need for a tow vehicle and a place to stay lead me to the recent purchase of a 83 MCI bus. Once the conversion is finished, my wife and I will be spending our weekends at the track and the weekdays traveling or boondocking until the next racing weekend. So we are looking forward to an early retirement and our new adventure as "Race Bums".................. |

Was car builder and crew chief from 1970 to 76 on the Sears Sportsman team(now Busch Grand National). Ran dragsters,B Gas and Buick powered rail before that. Built three trucks, two GMC's and one Peterbilt for the short lived truck series. Hold track records at Atlanta and Texas World Speedway with 8V92's. Been there, done that. Been back to a couple NASCAR Winston Cup events and found out it was not as much fun as it once was. Too much money, too many people and too much hipe, in my oponion. Think age has something to do with that!!!! I still have access to garage and pit passes to most of the events but do not attend. Can see more on the tube. Track management has really began to gouge the RV folks now just to park from what I hear. Don't get me wrong, I loved the time there dearly, learned a bunch, met and played poker with most of the big names, oggled the race queens, traveled more than I wanted, ate and drank too much, and would take nothing for the memories. Worst thing was getting a bum back from carring two tires over the wall. Surgery 11 yrs ago. Pretty good now. Both feet ran over on pit road at Charlotte. OK now. Learned to fly from the right seat in the plane from track to track. Sometimes 4 races a week, for points, and trying to keep up three cars in the meantime, was easy then I thought. Wouldn't be now!!! I have more stories than this computer can hold. Some can't be told while I am alive!!!!I still keep in touch with most of the guys but having been involved hands on, I find it impossible to attend as a spectator. Too old to do anything else!!!!!!! Have fun, enjoy it greatly, and if you ever look back in the records, look out for the "OLE 97". With very fond memories, Gene R. |

I was involved with groups of Mechanical Engineering students at the University of Wyoming back in the '90s. They designed and built Formula SAE race cars to compete against teams from all over the country and a few foreign countries. Looked like so much fun that I built one of my own. It's a "dwarf car". Uses a Suzuki GSXR 1100 engine, BMW 2002 differential(locked), 4 wheel independent suspension. The body is a hammer formed 3/4 scale '29 Ford coupe. Nasty little thing. Works well on road courses and ovals. I should sell it. I want to build something for Bonneville!! Also I still have the first car I built back in 1966. It's a '29 Ford roadster pickup running a warmed up flat head V8. |

Many of my car nut friends when I was growing up were into drag racing. I always bugged them with the question: "What do you do if there's a turn at the end of the strip?" Guess that came from only being 45 minutes from Laguna Seca raceway in Monterey, CA. Always did like the "corkscrew" at the top of the hill. My low-budget ("starving college student") racing was autocrossing - may not be as exotic as running Can-Am Chapparels at LS, but the skills it taught me saved my neck a few times. Especially driving Ralph Nader's favorite car. . . RJ PD4106-2784 Fresno CA |

I like collecting unusual experiences of other people one side facet of that is that I often find people of diverse original locations having mirrored or simular experiences. RJ happens to have an inclination to Corvairs, owns a 4106 and was obviously thrilled by the Can-Am series at LS....I happen to own 3 Corvairs, a 4106 and saw my 1st Can-Am at LS...that race in the late summer of 1972 laid the ground work for the next 20 years of my life. I was born into a racing involved family, my Dad wrenched on a pair of Jalopies than ran in a support series for THE BIG CARS (Sprint cars), I can clearly recall Sid collins' voice calling the 1954 race won by Pat Flarety (sp) when I was 5. Indy has always held my attention and I was kind of trollin here for a Midget fan or an INDY fan who makes the occasional midwest race or is a Memorial Day 500 attendee. BTW...there is a gentleman in Tejerias NM, just east of Albuq. who worked as a sports writer in Indiana in the '30's and eventually went to work for Goodyear's racing division his name is Dick Ralstin. Dick traveled the world as a rep for Goodyear Racing, and knew anyone worth their salt in the business, he has retired to his mountaintop cabin and now wiles the days away with his constant cannine companion Mariah, and when he is so moved , he will pen another story to add to the dozens he has recalled on his website at... http://home.flash.net/~dralstin/ Take your time if you visit his site, if you spend 4 hours there you will have learned more than you did in 12 years of public schooling, and you will also enjoy it more. We should all be blessed with Dicks ability to pass ideas and the times along to those who weren't fortunate enough to have been there. Enjoy and thank for the replies! SPECIAL NOTE TO RJ.. my email to you bounced back, so I couldn't tell you how the KANSAS DOT story ended....the mistake had been on the title since 1983, and an ammemded title certificate arrived at my door unexpectedly a week ago...thanks for your help!!! |
