I have a MCI-7, which had a 8V71 and a four speed transmission in it. The 8V71 needs to be replaced and the transmission is gone. I would like to get a motor and transmission for it, and get it going again. I woud like to know if there are any options I have on the motor and transmission which I install. I know the 8V71 will go back in, but is there some other motors that will fit without alot of modifications. I would also like to install a 10 speed transmission or maybe and automatic Allison. Whats the best way for me to go if you were in my shoes? |

I have repowere my bus which had a 8v71 and 4 sp manula with a 8v92TA and 4 speed allison. I tell you if I had it to do over again I would put a fresh 8V71 back in with the allison automatic. No mount to change , No exhaust to change. No bigger radiator. No new fan and clutches. I think you will find if you ask around that the 8V71 is one of the best GM v motors. I would stick with it> fred |

I would agree w/Fred that it would be much easier to just put the 8v71 back in, but I would 'discuss' that it is better than an 8v92. Personally, I would look for a 4 cycle. There are a lot of very good 2-3 yr old truck take-outs on the market available at almost any truck wrecking yard (seems as though truckers are increasingly having problems keeping them on the road. I know a guy currently putting a 3 yr old DD S60 and Fuller 10spd semi-auto into a Prevo Champion that he bought for 11K; less than 150k miles on it. Go to any truckstop and pick up some of the buy & sell papers, you'll find lots of sources for very good used engines and trans out of wrecks. But, a lot of work, including extending the back of the bus 22". |

Jay - IMHO - B4 you start this project, you've got to ask youself "is it worth it to get this coach running?" MC-7s have virtually NO resale value in today's market, and for the cost of installing a full powertrain, you can pick up a complete running coach. Additionally, the drop-center aisle presents interesting challenges to the converter, which is a consideration. With that said, I'd recommend an 8V71 /HT740 Allison combination. Most of the inline six cylinder truck motors (Cummins, DDA S60s) are too long to fit w/o major body reconfiguration. 10-spd RoadRangers are pretty wide, and some folk have had to modify the cradle to make them fit. You'll also have to deal with a "backwards" shift pattern. And do you really want to go thru seven gears just to get to 35 mph?? Food for thought, anyway. . . RJ PD4106-2784 Fresno CA |

RJ has a good point, Jay. For the same money you could pick up a newer MC-9 with a pretty fresh engine and transmission in it. Perhaps even one of those NJ MC-9's with a newly rebuilt engine and transmission. Either way, the 8v-71/HT740 combination is pretty bulletproof and relatively easy to maintain. FWIW... MR |
