Hi All my 1979 RTS doesn't charge we have had the bus for 3 yrs now. It has a 8v71 non-turbo with a rebuilt alt (the huge one that is gear driven) the last owner basically cut wires anywhere and everywhere. The stock regulater seems to be complete but most likely cut somewhere. Inside the batt box I have wires cut and hanging. Also this RTS has 24volt starter and a few 24v fans nothing else hooked up. I almost want to pull the 24v starter and go to a 12volt starter and change the fans out. I have an AMG for parts as well as a model for changing over to 12volt if needed. Shouldn't I just upgrade the reg and any thing else to the newer one and get rid of the old stuff in the batt box. For the last few years I have been able to run on my house batts for 12volt needs and watch how many times i have started the bus without recharging the 24 volt side. Thanks for the help!!!

I can send you the wiring diagrams to re-wire your OEM 24/12 regulator.

or

you can install this after market 24 regulator
--> http://www.ronthebusnut.com/detailDisp_10457699.html
and a simple car 12 volt alternator driven by the PTO belt to keep the 12v side happy

actually the OEM regulator 12v side was a very very poor regulator -

last choose - after either regulator is working - buy a Vanner Equalizer to keep the 12v side happy

the problem with the 12 side is the lights run off 12 volts and when driving at night - it will drain the lower 12 volts more than the upper 12 volts the 24 volt alternator kicks in and over charges the upper 12 and undercharges the lower 12

that's why you need a good 12 volt system also - vanner or PTO alternator
