Can someone tell me the correct procedure to start a GM 4106 from the rear controls? Do you still have to switch the master on in the front? There have been changes to mine and even though I have gotten in good with the book it doesn’t seem to give me what I want at the moment. Also the “engine control” legend plate appears to be set up for three positions. Normal, Off, Rear control. My switch is only on/off and that seems to go along with the wiring diagram in the book. It only controls the engine stop solenoid. Why is the legend plate set up for what looks like a three position switch? The rear start switch is a three position switch so it seems to be correct but I don’t know if I am using the proper sequence or procedure to start from the rear. Thanks for your help in advance. Laryn Someone has changed things by your description. When you put the rear run switch on and the engine stop solenoid operates just operate the rear start switch and you are in business. If the engine won't turn over then maybe the wiring has been changed to where you need the front run switch on. You can't hurt anything. On my bus you can start from the rear but the generator won't charge till you turn the front switch on. Bill |

My 4104 requires that the front "ignition" switch to be switched on, then the engine can be started & stopped from the rear panel. |

Sounds like there may be a difference between transit and OTR buses. Both my GMs, one a ex college bus (key switch) and the other 4107 (toggle switch) need to have the front switch on to start from the rear. Sounds like the transits rear controls override the front. Interesting. Don 4107 |

My 4104 is the same as Jim's. The rear start switch is inop unless this switch is on. My front engine run switch is only two position, on-off, as per the book. The rear start switch should be a momentary on or button, it should not be the type that can stay on, otherwise it will continue running the engine after it starts. Don't ask me how I know this!! |

yup, transits popularly can be fully controlled from front or rear. Highway coaches popularly need the front ignition on for the rear controls to allow engine start. You may invent a reason that is satisfying to you as to why this is! happy coaching! buswarrior |

While you are up front turning on the master you might want to take a moment to make sure it is not in any gear. |

One time my bus wouldn’t start and after several hours of troubleshooting I realized I didn’t have it in neutral (V730). I amaze myself how sometimes I bypass the simplest and obvious things when I am troubleshooting. After looking at the schematic till my eyes crossed, there is no way to start my bus without the front driver’s switch in the on position. I have also determined that somewhere along the line someone replaced the legend plate with one that is not for a 4106. It might be from a transit. It made for some confusion because I have nothing to compare my setup to. Thanks for the help. Laryn |
