Guys: The other day in a post, I asked several questions, the last being what should the oil pressure be running (within a reasonable range) on my 8V71. I have been having some twitch in the oil pressure gauge, but it remains kinda constant within a 48-52 lb area. In talking with my mechanic, he says anything above 35-38 is acceptable, although preferably higher. On a slow idle, it does drop down to the 10-20 lb range, and in going thru the gears will sometimes get up to about 60. I know there may be some issue on the gauge, and I am addressing that, but sure would like to know what you guys feel that a good oil pressure should be

Personally, I wouldn't touch it! ANY oil pressure is good oil pressure in any DD! My 8v92 only has about 15lbs at idle when warm but runs a constant 50-60 while driving! It's always going to fluctuate on the gauge!

The numbers you have given sound good. I wouldn't worry about it.

Buddy, I run the same motor as you. Idle cold 15 psi. Idle hot 5-10 psi. Highway speed, 40+ psi.

It has been my experience, if my guage starts to (twitch) I'm due for about a 1/2 - gal. of oil. However this does not happen that often bacause I check very often.

The short of this is, I concur with the other post on this subject.

Happy Bussing.

You know, I don't think any of these have much oil pressure at idle because of all of the lube supply takeoffs, and oil pressure is read at end of line. I beleive many think their engine has a problem, but don't talk about the low idle pressure. Very rare for a Detroit to lose a crank due to oil pressure; usually the pistons will seize first if run low on oil.

The oi preassure that u have its great one of the reasons while oil prs on 92,71 its that it has so many oil passages and galley and pump doesnt spin fast enough at low idle thats why its so important to keep on fast idle to keep oil prs and cooling blowers spining at a fast speed and dont forget your voltage outputs.
