When you say cuts in and out, does the unit shut down or just the compressor. If just the compressor then it may be the t-stat or the compressor overload. Pray that it's the t-stat.
The t-stat may be on its last leg or may be something as simple as a loose wire on the control side of the unit.
First check all connections from start to finish. Be sure that you have no a/c power on the unit during this check.
The t-stat has a differential pre. set points. Meaning, the t-stat will cycle somewhere between 4-6 degrees. The t-stat has a capillary tub that is pre-charged from the factory with the same refrigerant as your a/c., R-22 if an older unit. If the carpellary have lost its charge or, losing its charge this will cause your problem. A new t-stat is cheap and easy to replace. You may be able to pick one up at your local wholesale refrigeration part’s store.
As far as the location of the t-state, you should be able to see it on the face of the unit unless you have a remote wall mount t-stat.
I hope this adds light to your problem.
