Does the alternator on the generator (10k) need to be hooked in to charge bus batteries? I read somewhere that a bus wiring/charging system is set up so it has a slow charge so as not to overheat the batteries.. any help?

Don't hook any thing to your bus batteries. They should be keep separate from every thing else. If it was good enough when it was a bus it id good enough now.

It is ok to use a relay to cross connect battery systems for emergency use and to allow charging of one battery system from the other battery's charger or alternator.

I know some folks don't like this Idea, but it got me started at Busin 2001 when I had one bad bus battery and good house batteries. It is nice to flip a switch to solve a problem.
