Got an old FLAT TAPPET engine - read this-->

The Goverment mandated reduction in ZDDP from 1200-1400 parts per million (PPM) to 600-800 PPM is distroying cams and flat tappet lifters - especially during re-built engine break-ins

That's one way to get the old cars/ engines off the road. :-(

Generally it is only during initial cam break in. There are work arounds to get you past this critical period (we are talking almost literally the first start and the first hour or so of operation or less). One is GM EOS and additive you can buy at the dealer that has extra zinc in it. My understanding is that diesel oils aren't being reduced as much as oil intended for gas engines.

Kevin

Yes and no - Delo Multi weight will keep it higher ZDDP - but Rottela wouldn't

The KEY HERE is:
CI-4 (older standard - higher levels of ZDDP)
CJ-4 (new standard - lower levels of ZDDP)

It's worst at break in (needed to make sure the flat tappets slide enough to rotate during break-in) - but there's still a problem after breakin

GM EOS - (good stuff) but will be/has been discontinued -

If you have the 16 oz bottles of GM EOS (engine oil supplement) - use 1 bottle per oil change
with the new oil

and 2 bottles during cam break-in

before EOS (1 bottle) was recommended for cam break-in

there are other products coming to market and most cam makers have a supplement now

The the new rules were put into place to because ZDDP clogs catalictic(sp?) converters and new cars don't have flat tappets
