Hello Everyone! Wow...what a long strange trip is been :o) I hope everyone is doing well, I have had quite the summer.....I currently have my bus in Olancha, CA and need to drive it to Redding, CA in the next month...few weeks maybe. I am gonna home base in Redding for the winter, for about 6 months. The obvious route is 5, but I hate backtracking on 395 to 58 and over to 5 and was wondering what everyone thinks about taking 395 north to either50 w thru sac to 5 or or some other route around there and then over ( west) to 5...are you following me? how is 395 north of olancha ? anyone know?

any thoughts on the best way to get to Redding from Olancha? hugs to everyone, Ive missed ya!

If you have time 395 is not terrible.
Just plan a couple of extra hours and enjoy not having to drive I-5 the whole way.

Be sure you have plenty of fuel as I do not remember the fuel situation on 395.
I always try to take on a load of fuel when I get into California. I remember having to drive from San Diego to Ontario just to fuel up.

Someone could get rich if they built a truck stop in San Diego or LA. I do not know of a single truck stop or wash other than Ontario.

There is a good fuel stop in Bishop. I believe its a Shell gas station with diesel pumps. Also, I seem to remember a larger fuel stop just north of town. But it might be in Bridgeport not Bishop. 395 is a great road. I love driving US 395. 50 is winding road and maybe slow going. Make sure your brakes in good working order for the trip along 50.

For some beautiful sights take off to Bakerfield cut over 58 to 101 then on over to Highway one and the prettiest trip you'll ever see part of my family Land Grant and you can visit Hearst castle my great grandad sole it to Randolf at turn of century it's a trip of lifetime.Take lots of film

Morning, Kristine,
Cell service on 395 is not like being in the city, as there is just not that much civilization OR traffic out there. There is service near all of the towns, and more than you would expect out in the open. However, due to the lack of traffic, everyone out there is much more friendly, and people will still stop to help. Between Olancha and Carson City is a trip back in time, as you go thru the small towns of Lone Pine, Independence, Lee Vining, Bishop, and Bridgeport. You go thru downtown, at 25 mph, no bypasses were ever needed, as there isn't a rush hour. The road is the same as from Kramer Jct. to Olancha, all four lane divided, except thru towns, which isn't a big thing.
Now, out of Bishop, you have to climb to Conway, (8183') Deadman, (8041')and Sherwin (7000') Summits, There are no sharp curves, its not windy, (as in clock) you just have to climb. You stay over 5000' inbetween, and you're starting at over four, so its not like 8000 to sea level and back up. Around Mono Lake, the speed limit is 60, and further North, you follow the Walker River for several miles at about 50.
A couple of thoughts getting over the Sierras to the Redding side. One is 50 thru South Lake Tahoe to Sacramento, the longest and slowest straight crossover. I would suggest 50 to 28 to 267 around the lake to Truckee, then West on 80. That way you can leave more in the casinos. If you've had enough of mountain climbing, stay on 395 thru Reno, to Hallelujah Jct. Left on hiway 70, which takes you thru Portola and Quincy, and on down the Feather River canyon. Easy grade, lots of scenery, 40 mph in parts of it, and near Oroville, take 149 towards Chico. 99 runs into 149, continue to Redding.
My only warnings are that you will have to climb the mountains North of Bishop, and don't become the revenue source for the small towns by exceeding the speed limits! Its all 65 between towns, just do it, if your gears let you, the right lane isn't all beat up, and the few truckers won't bother you.
If you're in a hurry, then go back to 58, its an easy climb from Mojave to Tehachapi, and then down into Bakersfield, as it parallels the railroad. Take 99 North from Bakersfield, as it runs into 5 at Sacaramento. Its all FLAT from Bakersfield to Redding.

I'll second George's recommendation for the Feather River Canyon route (70) off 395 north of Reno. Beautiful drive - in some areas you're on one side of the river and the railroad is on the other, very similar to I-70 in Colorado. Take your time and enjoy!

If you need fuel in the Reno area, Sam's Town is about a mile east of 395 on I-80, lots of room to get around, and decent food in the casino's dining halls.

wowowowowowowowowow thanx you guys ,....i dont speed, and im a good driver, new jake brake put in a few months back and running well.....i want safe and dotn care about a few extra days here and there jsut dont want trapped on windy roads......dont like a climb alot but some is ok........still thinking.will post again soon,,,,,
