I am making my first trip in my mci9. I will be going to Florida using interstates 77,26, and 95. As long as I stay on interstate Highways is there any overpass problems? If there is How do I find where they are in advance? thanks carl |

I drove my MC8 from NC down 77/26/95 to Jacksonville, then 301 over to 75. I had no problems. |

I think the legal MINIMUM overhead clearance on any interstate highway is 13'6" Jack |

Try this site: http://www.pnv.com/ Apparently you have to sign-up to get that kind of info, but it is free. I've not used it yet, but intend to try it out later. Scott |

Hello Carl and all. Go to the truck stop and purchase a Rand McNally Motor Carriers' Road Atlas. Do NOT pay the cover price of US$19.95. Good truck stops will sell them for close to US$10. Many pages in the front with state by state by province details on low clearance on major routes, restricted routes, weather info #'s, police, DMV, speed limits, fuel taxes, big mileage directory, and index of towns, cities, counties, etc. It makes for an interesting read to see the differences around the continent. Let the copliot preview it, so you can share the blame when "the bus" hits the low one! Just by planning your fuel purchases on a cross country trip to save on state fuel tax will help pay for the book. Maps have all the truck friendly routes highlighted, and of course rest stops, picnic areas, exit numbers and all that sort of usual map stuff. Please folks, make darned sure you know EXACTLY how tall you are going down the road. Just because you fit under a 12' sign at home, doesn't mean that underpass is really 12' and another 12' elsewhere might be quite a bit shorter... might be best to NEVER TRUST YOUR BUS TO THOSE SIGNS when they are close to or equal to your real height! For those planning to trade their roof airs, roof raise, antenaes and satelite dishes et al for an open air convertible bus experience, please ignore the foregoing advice! Ever notice no one ever comes back to the Board to tell us they wedged it under a bridge? Nope must have been someone else, I got tired of that conversion and started another one.... happy coaching! buswarrior |

U.S. D.O.T. Ruling: Any overpass less than 16 feet is marked on it. Lowest Interstate overpass is 14' 5" near Chattanoga.Tenn. on old I-24 (may be torn out by now due to heavy construction in that area)Other than that 13'6'' is good for any state road as well. (UNLESS marked ahead) I'm from Ohio and have had my 4905 down the WV Turnpike and around Columbia, then South to Ft. Myers., FL several times. Soooo...enjoy the ride! Cheers...JJ |

The Low overpass on I24 is still in place (Kimball/South Pittsburg Exit). We live near it. I don't think it would be a problem with a bus as most of the semi's go under it just fine. Mostly it's the overheight things that get stuck (one did last summer). No problem if you are going North if you get off exit to stop at Wal-Mart, but you will go under it if you are getting off/on from the south bound side. Lorna |
