I bought a 4106 GM with a DD 8V71 AND ALLISON-730?
a tree speed automatic and power assist steering I don't know what brand of steering assist. What is the best engine oil for the DD? The transmission? and the power steering? I live in AZ.

For the engine, straight 40Wt. Make sure it says CF-2 on it.

Jerry -

Engine oil: Chevron Delo 100, straight 40wt, CF-2. Has proper ash content for the 8V71 in your '06. DO NOT USE MULTI-WEIGHT OILS IN THIS ENGINE!! Look in the yellow pages for fuel distributors, you'll probably have to order it. Comes in gallon jugs, six per case.

Transmission: Dexron ATF, or some folk run 30wt engine oil. (Our local transit system that I used to work for did. . .)

Power Steering: Dexron ATF.

As for what brand of power steering, you'll have to look under the coach. If the power steering hoses go to a ram located parallel to the drag link, you've got a Vickers power assist. If the hoses go directly into the steering gearbox bolted to the front axle, you've got an upgraded Sheppard unit.

Be careful on the power steering. For instance on a 4905 you can use engine oil or Dextron. Problem is, people add the wrong stuff not knowing what is in there, bad results. You must not mix types of fluids.
I wrote my type on the PS tank with a marker so I will not get confused, nor will someone else.

Try your local commercial fuel dealer. That's where I get my Delo. Buy it by the case. They can probably sell you the filter too. You'll need a BIG filter wrench.

Williams-Detroit Diesel locations have 5 gal pails of the Mobil product for the DD.

The Grand Rapids, Michigan distributor ships to me UPS.

Check them out on the web.

Is the straight 40wt Heavy Duty I bought at KMart not good enough to top up with between oil changes? I seem to use about 2 - 3 quarts for about 100 gals of diesel. Is that a lot, about right, good?

Hi John,

It should be rated 'CF-2'. I use Chevron Delo.

I doubt that the oil Kmart sells will have this rating.

Assuming you get 6-700 miles on 100 gal of fuel, using 1/2 gal. of oil isn't too bad, I don't think. Could be better. I don't monitor my usage as closely as I should. I always have a couple gallons in the bus and just top it up from time to time.

RJ:
you say "DO NOT USE MULTI-WEIGHT OILS IN THIS ENGINE!!"
The previous owner had always used Chevron Delo 100, 15-40.

My mechanic worked more than 10 years for Greyhound, he says that is what they always used in ALL climates.

What is the deal here?
Possibly a spec. by DD formed before multi weight oil was fully accepted?

Acording to DDA Delvac 1240 is the recomended oil for the 71 series engines, striaght 40 WT.I get mine from my local Mobil oil dealer.$20.00 Per case 4 gallons per case.Since using this product I experience much better oil pressure,DDA recomends it as it holds its visccity at elavated temperatures.
