JohnMC9 mentioned you had one of these. Does it work well? Is it a package unit or is it belt driven off the bus engine?

Doug -

The Welch Auxiliary system runs with a belt from the engine,
the same as an automotive AC system. They have both a 12
and 24 volt version.

(You can also find these units used, and fairly cheap).

My MC9 came with one; it'll put ice on the windows, if I run
it on high. Aside from the blower noise typical for that type
of air conditioning when on high (it's like a massive window unit),
it's a pleasure to own.

Because it's located in the rear, it fails to cool the driver's area
on a real hot Florida day, but some owners have piped it into
the dashboard system, and fared well with it. The Welch Rep
I talked to can give a name or two to contact, but they did not
supply the "how to" info directly (it was awhile ago, perhaps
their policy have changed?).

Keep in mind, that a basement AC system's cost may be comparable,
and the benefits better! I chose to use rooftop AC's, for both
price and repair/replacement factors, and keep the Welch as
a backup and additional cooling....

There's no "right or wrong", it's all a matter of how you plan
to use your rig, and how much you want to spend.

(I'm a cheap %$^#).

If I were interested in a used unit where should I start looking?

Google this:

Used bus parts

Or

Surplus bus parts

There are plenty of bus junk yards around, and many local
bus operators with buses they're parting out.... I'd try calling
some local bus operators, and ask. If they don't have a junk
bus, they may be able to tell you where they sent it..

Keep in mind, that although the Welch system is great for using
while the engine's running, there are other alternatives that
may be more useful to you. A high output diesel genset can
run AC units, heaters, and all the other toys that can be run
from the power-pole also.

Is it practical to convert this system to an electric motor-driven compressor? I'm thinking run the compressor off engine alternator (or gennie) while underway and pole (or gennie) while parked. I recognize that we're talking serious amps here but it should be do-able with the right parts.

I have a used Carrier that came from a Airporter that is very similar to the Welch. See the Flea Market, June 28th

The Welch rep told me that it's not likely to be able to run
the AC compressor on any "practical sized" electric motor.

Ahhh..... anything is possible.... but practical?

There's so many options, why beat a path through the swamp?

The Welch is a great system to use in place of the OE system,
and along with a basement system, split, or rooftop units... And
it's possible to pipe it into the existing dashboard system..

It is, only what it is.
