just wanted to say thanks to all of the great advice that you guys offered up.after exhausting all possible problems i finally removed the starter and took it to a heavy/ starter repair shop here in nashville.my starter was SAAAAADDDDD!!!the verdict.....$300.00 to rebuild mine.i can exchange for a factory rebuilt for $239.00,which btw they have in stock.the guy said that when he took it apart that the starter had a good bit of oil in it.i expoect that it came from it being ran 255mi with 15/40 oil in it when i picked the bus in fl. once the po told me that he had put 15/40 in it,i corrected it with just 40 wt,which stopped it from pushing the oil out like a water faucet.anyways, does this sound like a fair price?????

I think if it were me I would bite the bullet and "git 'er done". I had my starter rebuilt a couple of years back for around 100 bucks, but it may not have needed as much as yours. I was glad to have it done as that is one thing I won't have to worry about.
You just have to decide if you want to fool with the core shipping hassle, as opposed to taking it down to have it rebuilt.

Hope this is the problem you have been searching for.

Good Luck,

Paul

Chris, if your bus has a V730 Allison auto or similar, it has what is referred to as "wet" bell housing. This means that there is normally transmission oil in the flywheel/bell housing. Starters & anything attached to the housing have to be sealed. It may be that both your old AND new starter are not sealed. Trucks, other vehicles & construction equip usually have dry housings. (Starters for most Detroit powered V drive buses are also "opposite rotation" due to the engine rotating opposite from normal engine rotation) Be sure your starter guy did this right. A Detroit WILL run backwards, I have had it happen several times. If you have a manual trans you can just stall the engine but an automatic won't stop until you have air pressure and since there will be no oil pressure there will likely be serious engine damage by then.

If I were installing a new starter on a GM, I would note the correct engine rotation (You can tell by the fan), then I would jump start the starter on the ground & verify the rotation before installing it.
