My 05 (with power steering) has quite a bit of play in the steering. On rough roads, crosswind conditions or when passed by a high-speed 18 wheeler, it has quite of steering "slop" and wants to wander. Anyone have similar experiences? Has anyone installed a buffer? I'm in the Milwaukee/Chicago area if anyone can recommend a wrench to check it out or install a buffer. Thanks dg |

Before you start spending $$$ on anything you need to eliminate areas in which slop will cause the conditions you describe. To start with, inspect all of the moving parts in the steering linkage. Worn out tie rod ends, drag link, etc. will cause the same problems. Worn out king pins can cause some of the same problems. Improper alighnment and torsion bar adjustment will cause some of the same problems. A worn out steering box or an out of adjustment steering gear can also produce the same problems. Eagle built a lot of buses over a lot of years, none of which needed a buffer to keep them driving straight. If your bus doesn't like to drive straight I think you may have more of a problem than what a steering buffer can solve. Mark O. Castle Rock, WA |

What the heck is a buffer? Do you mean damper? Ditto on getting rid of all the slop. Your box is in need of adjustment or a rebuild. It is all cumulative. You may find some of it goes away if you grease everything up. An alignment is in order as soon as you get things tightened up. |

There is a good place for steering problems here in Minnesota. www.precisionframe.com They do lots of steering repairs on RVs, buses, and the like. Unfortunately, the work they did on my bus didn't help much, but my problem was very minor. I have minimal play, but it wanders a little bit going down the road. The only thing they could find was a steering control arm that needed to be tightened a little bit. |

one thing to check is the toe in, i had a wander problem for yrs, rebuilt the whole front end and had it aligned but it still wandered, one day i got a tape measure out and mesured the distance between the front of the wheels and the back and found the thing was toed out insted of in, we corrected this and i can take my hands off the steering wheel now and go straight, the alignment shop didnt do anything but play all day and charged me a bunch of money, had no idea they would do that but looking at the sheet they gave me they claimed they adjusted things on there that are not adjustable, so id take a look.
