Well we just got back last night from our first trip in the coach. We took her to our favorite spot in Port Aransas Texas. She drove like a dream and faired the heavy rain that we had early Friday morning. We are still at the tin can camping stage, but we all had a lot of fun taking her out and showing her off to anyone who wanted a look at her. I even go to drive her for the first time on the way home. Needless to say I was a little nervous about driving, but after a while it was a lot of fun. Of course I quickly decided that before we take another long trip we need to get cruise control added to our list of things we need not just want. When I get all of the pictures downloaded I will post a couple. Where are some other great places to head to? We live in Norman Oklahoma and are looking for someplace a little closer to take her for a weekend trip and get the kids away from home. Anny suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is cruise control something that can be added to a bus? How much does it cost? Where can you buy it or have it done?

My 4104 cruise control is the hand throttle. It is cheap and reliable. It also demands quite a bit of attention which, in my opinion, keeps me from ever getting sleepy. I drive all day and never get sleepy but when I drive the van on cruise control I always get sleepy after about 3-4 hrs.

I've learned just where to set it for different situations and since the acceleration is so slow I can set it when I first get to fourth gear and just about hit the exact speed I want when it finally gets moving well.

Usually cruise control on a diesel is incorporated into the pump is more complicated and more expensive than doing a gas motor. Add air throttles to the mix.

Joe -

Except on the 8V71 Detroit in Amy's GMC, there's no injection pump, and, because of it's vintage, it's not a DDEC engine either. So that limit's Amy's choices for a cruise control to either the King (expensive) or Rostra (reasonable) unit.

Amy -

Pete RTS Daytona, a frequent poster on this BBS, handles the Rostra cruise control units. If you contact him, he can help you. Use the Search button in the upper RH corner.

Glad you had fun "tin can camping". The kids will talk about it for years, believe me.

You folks just missed a bus rally in Texas, was last month. You have to monitor not only this, but the MAK publishing BBS and the GMC busnuts group on Yahoo for lots of bus info.

FWIW & HTH. . .

Thanks RJ. The weekend that we went to pick up the bus is the weekend of the rally in TX. I was so bummed that we weren't able to go to it. I am keeping an eye open for another one that is sort of close to home since the kids are in school.
Thanks for the info on the cruise control. I think we have decided to go with the Rostra, but before Scott digs into it he wants to do a little more research.

Jerry
If you still have it for sale when he is ready I will give you a call.

When you install the Rostra (I installed my Rostra actuator at the engine, working the throttle lever on the governor), make sure that the actuator runs out of travel before the linkage. I did not and every time I climbed a decent hill & the unit pulled the throttle wide open & held it there, it would disconnect as though you had touched the brakes. Seems there is a protective system in case the linkage gets bound up. Other than that the Rostra has worked great! It is the best money you can spend on your bus (other than say, brakes!) to get cruise control!

JimBob, my experience exactly with the King cruise control. Sure took a while to figger that one out. Thought I was the only one that ever had that problem. LOL
