Doug, We were just there this summer and we stayed at the campground called Cherry Hill Park - http://www.cherryhillpark.com/ it has transportation right there in the park so all we had to do was walk from our site to the bus stop at the entrance to the park. We then took the city bus to the metro train system which was excellent to get us to everything in DC... This is definitly the way to do it. No need to drive into DC and find parking, etc... John |

Doug, I agree that Cherry Hill is an excellent option. Our FMCA chapter uses it for rallies occasionally. We are an hour south of Winchester, west of New Market if you want a place to stop in the Shenandoah Valley. If you are into Civil War sites this is a good spot. Plenty of room, water, electricity. I spent a lot of time in Hopkinton when I was young. Godspeed, Michael |

We were planning a DC trip this summer that was canceled because of a death in the family. We were not going to pull a toad so I had to do a little research on where to park. If you have ever been to DC before you know that it is not very easy to find places to park a car much less a bus. I found out that Union Station can accommodate busses and RVs 24/7, call them if you need to park downtown, the rates are reasonable but they have a weird pricing schedule that is no big deal but you need to understand it. Union Station link: http://www.unionstationdc.com/default.asp Parking link: http://www.unionstationdc.com/directions.asp?gid=13 Here are some other campgrounds that are within a short drive if you don’t want to stay at Cherry Hill: Fairfax County: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/lakefairfax/fairfaxcamp/ Bull Run: http://www.nvrpa.org/parks/bullrun/index.php Pohick Bay: http://www.nvrpa.org/parks/pohickbay/?pg=camping.html I am a big fan of Virginia state and county parks. I tend to avoid commercial parks like Cherry Hill for numerous minor reasons one of which is the cost of additional family members (I have a large family, six children). I also like to be more “in the woods” than set up in parking lot style camping. However, Cherry Hill is close and beautiful, if it was just me and my wife it would be fine. Doug I was there last summer and we stayed at Duncan's Family Campground in Lothian MD phone 1-800-222-2086. It is near the Largo Town Center Metro Station, end of the blue line going east. They have a van that can take u there in the morning and pick U up at night or U can park yourself at the station in the parking building and it is well secured. here's tip when riding the Metro , buy a all day pass for $6.00 I think, then u can bee bop all around DC to the different places and change lines when ever U want, there are no restaurants at Smithsonian , I suggest to go down to Union square [red line] and they have very good food places there. |
