The remote starter switch for my 1987 Onan 6.5 NH genset fell appart. I bought a replacement switch from Onan but I need to know how to wire it. The switch in an (on)-on-off pattern with 5 screw on contact, one in the center, two on top, two on the bottom. I have five wires coming out of the dash, green, red, orange, blue, and green with a white stripe. I called Onan but they could not help.

Hope someone out there can help...Thanks in advance

Joe,

I don't know if there is a real color code for those wires. When I got my NH, it had red, 2 blue, black, and green wires. I do just happen to have the diagram for the switch connections here at work.
1 - Ground
2 - Stop
3 - Start
4 - Battery Condition Meter
5 - Generating Lamp / Hour Meter

These should also match up to correspondingly numbered terminals on the printed circuit board (according to the info I have). I hope this helps.

David thanks for your help.

I may have a different pannel than you do and I should have mentioned that begore. My aux. start is just a switch with a seperate hour meter wired to it. There is no circuit board. I am pretty sure the hot wire hooks to the center post on the switch, but I am not exactly sure where the other 4 go. Can I use trial and error here or would I fry the coil?

Thanks

The circuit board is in the generator. These ID numbers are on the back of the switch. There's not a hot; there's a ground that's switched between a wire to complete the circuit for the start relay. There's another wire that, when grounded, engages the stop relay. I'd use a multimeter to find the ground ground. If not, I'd connect one to another (one by one) 'til it starts. Then, I'd check the others for voltage. When you find one that's not 'hot' relative to ground, that should be the wire to the stop relay. While it's running, you'll have 12 volts (relative to ground); that'll be the one that operates the indicator light and hour meter. This is basically how I deciphered the wiring for mine. Good luck.

David

I just wanted to thank you for all your advice. That last bit of info about no hot wire really cracked the case.

I wired the ground to the center pole, the start wire to the top pole, the stop wire to the bottom and the accessory to the top pole and everything worked great.

Thanks, Joe

I'm glad that you got it worked out and that I was (finally) able to help somebody! As much help as I've received since owning this bus, it's about time I helped out.

FWIW, the older Onan generators start and stop by the completion of a ground to either energize or de-energize a relay. In the case of the solid state boards..it's really the same animal but you just can't see it unless you're steeped in reading electronics schematics.

I'll offer this again for any who didn't see it last time I posted it. Flight Systems, in Lewisberry, PA rebuilds most of the Onan solid state boards at a reasonable price and has a better warranty than Onan. flightsystems.com

Pete, the manual you offered the link for is the Power Drawer unit which was used exclusively in the GMC Motor Homes. Doesn't apply in this case.

Bob

Joe asked about the "REMOTE START SWITCH WIRING" - are you saying that the GMC Power Drawer-NH uses a different style 5 wire remote switch than his 87 6.5 KW Onan NH ??
