I just removed the air compressor from my mci5a that is attached on
the rear side of the 8v71 because it's not working and I can't seem to
see how it is driven from the engine? A friend said to check the
condition of a fiber gear but I can't remember if he said it was on
the compressor or engine. I do see 4 bolts on the engine side that
look like something could attach there. If that is where the fiber
gear was will it hurt anything else if the pieces are left wherever
they fell?

Bob, I have not removed compressor from my 8V71 but I have removed the power steering pump. It had a fibre block that joined the engine to the pump with slip in pins on each side of the block. If your coupler is missing then it was either not installed or in the pan, your judgement wheather to go after it or not.>>>Dan (Kalamazoo)

When I lost my air compressor last year I knew nothing about it either. When luvrbus delivered a replacement to me I removed the old one. He said it could be the fiber gear or a regular gear. If I remember it is driven off the cam on one side. My problem was the key was bad. You should have seen the gear when you removed the compressor. I'll have to dig though my manual tomorrow and look it up.

I found the same topic on a search that answered my question. There is a fiber disk that bolts to the cam with 4 bolts that the drive coupler fits into. It is the weak point so if your compressor locks up the gear breaks instead of something else that would cost much more to fix. I called Us Coach which confirmed my findings an ordered a replacement.
Thanks Guys......

my 8v92 has a steel gear and flex plate i thought all the later compressors had their own shear key.the 8v71 used this type gear for the blower drive for years and had problems with it also.Dan the remains of the drive are in the oil pan some people leave them in the pan but i wouldn't take the gamble

If the retaining bolts for the fibre block are not in place then chances are slim that the block is in the pan.>>>Dan

I found my manual but it looks like you have the correct information. Good Luck.
