I'm wondering if I should get a 27 lb Honda or Yamaha 1 KVA generator/inverter. The bus has a 6.5 KVA propane generator. The bus generator will run the a/c but I don't need that too often. Mainly I need to charge 4 90 amp-hr deep cycles. The Heart inverter seems to charge at about 50 amp maximum, or about 0.6KVA. That's 10% of what the generator can do. Seems like a quiet gas-sipping 1 KVA portable would be good for battery charging. What do you think? |

I know the more experienced will answer your question and educate the rest of us on this. Just looking at it on the surface I think it is a good idea. With gas prices going nowhere but up those little efficient gensets look like they would do what you want it to. What would be nice is the versatility of having it to use around the house for other things or projects. My brother is an OTR Owner/Operator and uses a 2kw Honda to power his window mount AC unit when parked; going on four years now. Also if your main genset went down you would have some sort of back up….FWIW Laryn |

I bought the 2kw Honda portable, and love it. It's as quiet as a Singer sewing machine, and runs our class B's 8.5 roof air w/out a problem. It'd power a decent sized battery charger quite well, while you watch TV, etc... Well worth the cash! |

I have the 3K Yamaha inverter/generator model. Bought from a friend's dealership, and he carries both Yamaha and Honda. I bought a couple years ago when Yamaha beat Honda to market with the 3K. No othger reason, my friend has no more warrenty problems with either brand. Quiet, fuel efficient, has managed to run both roof airs, (I don't make it a habit to stress it like that) even though mine are quite a bit older power sucking models. You can position it out on the ground according to your environment at the end of the shore cord. According to wind, neighbours, sunshine, whatever. Or leave it sitting in the bay, door open and business end pointed out. I have no courage to leave it in the bay without greater efforts at sealing said bay from the interior. One of the local TV station swears by the small Hondas. They run 'em pretty much non-stop, year round, in Toronto, strapped to the roof rack of their chase vans. These Hondas and Yamahas are definitely a versatile little workhorse with great reputations. If you can manage with small power, the choice is a good one. happy coaching! buswarrior |

__. But I'd hate to have to go to the whole "add another fuel tank thing". Is there a 2.5/3Kw diesel-powered gennie that's as small and quiet????? |

I also use a 3K Yamaha inverter/generator with power boost as my primary genset. My coach is all electric and with a little power management I stay very comfortable. My new coach has a 15 kw diesel genset and you can bet your a$$ I wont use it while dry camping to charge batteries and run the fridge. I know a lot of people that are doing just what your thinkin' about and are very happy with the fuel savings. Since my bay space is very limited Ill probably go with the Yamaha 1k model.
