1st the thanks should go to RJ and not me, he has the knowledge and I have the void to put some of it in...!

Can I assume that because it was a tour coach in the Black Hills of SD that is has "mountian gears" in it and thus is NOT a flatlander milage king?

It doesn't happen to have the upper "vista" windowettes above the normal ones, does it?

Trans auto or std.?

thanks again ....welcome along!

Thanks RJ.

You know, we've went right by your place a couple of times already, and it wouldn't surprise me if we go by there again within the year. I'll try to let you know and see if we can visit.

Hey Fred, I didn't realize ours had ever seen service in NY. Since ours are so close, I would think the odds were good that they were equipped alike!

By the way, we had Glass Pro replace our side windows. $200 paid for both, installed. It was a good solution for us.

Tom & Fred -

They probably were equipped alike, as they were part of a 15 bus order by Carey, with Fred's being the last of that bunch.

The whole order was delivered between March and April of 1964, so yours, Tom, may actually be an April Fool, since it's #9 of 15. . . (JK!)

Tom;

I am looking to buy a converted 4107 that lives in Michigan and wanted to know if there are any corrosion problem areas I should inspect more closely than others. It is a professional conversion from the late 80's and is used mostly in winter.

I am a neophyte at this and would appreciate all the advice I can get. Thanks much!

Hi John, look for holes in the skin near all the windows, around wheelwells and the tailgate.

Look at the frame areas that the supension is hooked to and the suspension elements, particularly the airbeams, shock and airbag mounts.

Look for wrinkles in the side skin. They can mean that the frames under the wrinkles are rusted away.

Regard cracks as seriously as corrosion. Look for rot in the plywood deck the bay doors are hung on.

There are many good sources with more detailed information. A search on the board should give you some ideas.

FWIW

Tom; Appreciate advice on corrosion. Any input on obvious signs of mechanicals needing help? I understand DD's drool oil, so what to look for? Engine represented as fairly fresh, as is suspension/ air bags. How do you check an auto tranny?

Had a cool idea for a book! How about the complete neophytes guide to buying a bus? (I detest the "idiot's" series as I am not one)Could cover all of the questions a guy needs to know to be an informed purchaser, complete with pix and tips. May even become an asset for the non technical owner of a coach as to what to look for in his own equipment before it becomes a problem$$.

Hi John, we're way off thread. Look for a new thread called "The Complete Neophytes Guide".
