I have just returned from a 7000 mile trip to CA using the O/D unit on my 6V92TA DDEC IV / V731 ATEC that Bill Teal designed. My mileage went from an average of 6.6 mpg to an impressive 8.3 mpg. (based on the imperial measurement) With the average cost of diesel fuel around $2.90 a gallon I saved approx $600. This pretty well paid for the O/D unit. I found as a side effect a lot less engine noise and only used 5 qts of oil for 7000 miles. I don't have any oil leaks despite what some think of a DD. The engine will have a lot less wear on it with the lower rpm as well. I was able to engage and disengage the O/D unit with out even feeling it by adjusting the throttle. Engage - coast. Disengage - full throttle. The few busnuts that have emailed me regarding the O/D units. Don't give up as I know the parts aren't easy to find but it is worth it in the end.
Bill
PS: I met Bill Teal and his wife in Santa Fe NM on our trip. Great couple.

Excellent report, Bill! This is another monument to the ingenuity of busnuts.

And one big raspberry to everyone who tells folks with wild ideas that it can't be done.

happy coaching!

Bill,

How can I find out more about the O/D you have and where/how to get one, install etc.?

Thanks,

GreaT News Bill I'm glad your trip went well.
I have a VS2-8 tranny from Fishbowls brians old bus and I have a V730 from Edmonton transits # 766

I was planning on just coupling the 8V71 to the V730 and go with that as I have a 4:10 rear end in my bus. But now you got me thinking again.

I thought of selling the VS2-8 at one time as Brian was told by the previous owner that it was rebuilt. It sure shifted good on my way back from Colorado.
It was to bad I had already changed out my rear end as I could have just used the Vs2-8

Now I'm committed to use the V730 as it will work good with the 4:10.

Guys
You need a VS2-8 flywheel and the drive drum from the planetary gear set in a VS2-8. You also need the planetary gear set from a VS2-6 and the direct/splitter clutch pack with mounting flange from either one. You need the VS2 input shaft and a V730 input shaft to weld together so you can mate the V730 and VS2 parts. There is a bit of precision machining as well. I am sure Bill Teal still has a couple of books on how to do which I am sure he would be glad to sell. His number is 505-983-8753. Hope this answers some of the questions about this fun project. The hardest part of the whole thing is to collect the needed parts as they are from a fairly old tranny.

What is your overall ratio in overdrive, and what was your typical cruising speed?

I have a 4:56 to 1 rear end ratio. With the O/D engaged it is 3:5 to 1. My top speed is mathematically 88 mph. I had the bus going 80 mph at times and it still had more to go but my wife brought it to my attention we were well above the limit. I found it liked to cruise about 70 mph which is about 1736 rpm. My max rpm is 2110.

Could you use the planetary gear and direct/splitter clutch from the VS2-8. I know that this would make the overdrive gear .808/1 but for those of us with 4.125 rear ends that would give us the same final drive as the old stick. Would it fit, etc. That way we would only have to find an old VS2-8 tranny. Is my thinking correct?

Billy, I have a VS2-8 in my 06, with the 4.125 rear it was WAY too high. I replaced my ring $ pinion with a 5.55/1 and came out just right,>>>Dan

I will answer here rather then on the email you sent just incase somebody else might want to know. The VS2-8 set of gears will cause too much a drop in RPM when you engage the O/D unit. You will end up with no power with a 4:125 rear end. I run a 4:56 rear end and find I wouldn't want any lower number then that. The only parts from the VS2-6 you need is the planetary gear set and the slitter clutch drum plate with the gear on it to swap into the VS2-8 planetary gear set up. From what I have heard is the VS2-8 parts are hard to find. Nimco has VS2-6 trannies in stock. Hope this answers the question for you and anyone else that might have thought that you only need one tranny. Dan is right. Bill

You can tell if you can see the input side of it. The VS2-8 has teeth around the outside of the planetary gear drum where the VS2-6 is smooth and has a flat plate on it to attach to the flywheel. Hope this helps you.

The other problem with using the VS2-8 ratio is if accidently try to go back out of overdrive at too high an engine speed the engine will increase in speed enough to possibly destruct. I think the drop when shifted into overdrive is something like 800 rpm- so if you run to ..say 2100 rpm and then shift; you will drop to 1300, which isn't good or liked by the engine. Hence, the need for the VS2-6 planetary, which I believe drops the rpm by 400. Let's say you mistakenly down shifted at 2200, causing the engine speed to increase to 2600; not good but probably no damage. VS2-8; same error- 3000 rpm yeowww!!!. Anyway, don't get alarmed- nobody makes a mistake when they drive. I want to install a pressure switch in the governor pressure port to not allow this to accidently happen. Just my thoughts. I bought one of Teals manuals a couple of years ago, but have too many irons in the fire to pursue it yet.

You are right about downshifting at high RPM. I have tried to come up with a system to prevent downshifting till the road speed is down to a resonable speed but you would have to come up with a speed sensing method to do it. Pressures don't work. Let me know if you come up with anything. Bill

If I remember right the switch is to hold the tranny from shifting into O/D or to kick it down for hill climbing by allowing the engine to rev to the govenor in direct drive. It has been a long time since I drove a coach equipped with a VS tranny. I have been retired for ten years now. Bus Warrior might be able to remember the Gray Coaches we ran to Oshawa and Hamilton that had these trannies. Bill

Sorry Bill.

All I remember was the electric toggle switch to get it gear, and that is dim!

Drove one once in training, and once in service, with a roaring fever, selling tickets, trying not to get lost, in the first couple of months on the job.

If I knew then, what I know now, I'd have paid more attention!

happy coaching!
